STARGAZING
( continued from here). it's time for sad duels and talking with dragon wife! )
[ It's so frustrating. Yugi feels as if his words can't pierce whatever dark cloud hangs over his other self. It sticks to him like wet clothes and he's unable to just rip them off. It's a side of Atem that Yugi has never seen before, and, part of him wonders if he really can help remove that shadow. He's unable to forgive himself for being human and having a moment of weakness. A moment with dire fallout and consequences, but, they overcame it. Dartz's soul is freed, the darkness beaten back for at least a little while, and they all lived to see it through.
Yugi can't think of more to ask for. He knows that his other self is looking for something or someone to tell him that it's alright in the end. Except, even if Atem hears it, will he believe it? Despite his constant reassurances and remarks, he can see how that shadow haunts the eyes of the usually confident spirit.
Well... Yugi isn't going to give up. He's going to keep trying to convince Atem and show him what he can.
It just might be something he can't do alone.
A determined look comes to his eyes and he is already walking past Atem. He isn't dismissing the older spirit or the look he gives him. Instead, he's pulling on his school jacket. He looks back at Atem, knowing it looks a little ridiculous that he has his jacket on over his pajamas and socks to top it off. It's as close as he's going to get to wearing slippers though.
Cultural habits never really die. ]
Come on, we're going. [ No room for debate in his tone. ] I can feel you want to ask me something. So, ask along the way.
[ They're going and that's final.
He just knows that if he tell Atem where they're going that he'll insist they don't. There will be a million reasons as to why they shouldn't, while ignoring the main reason they should. In Yugi's mind, there's one other person that can help him shake the shadow that hangs over his partner. She helped Atem when Yugi couldn't. Who else can he ask? ]
And don't think about backing out of whatever it is you want to ask me. I'll pester you the whole way there until you do.

Is he glad that they were able to free the souls of their friends, and free Dartz's soul in the process? Of course. Can he forget how far he fell in the process of putting things to rights? That is far easier said than done. It may take time, and he hopes that Yugi doesn't ever lose patience with him, but finding his footing again and his belief in himself isn't something that will happen overnight. Forgiving himself is also something that may take a very long time, and he knows he hasn't even taken the first steps towards getting there.
He watches Yugi pull on his jacket, but he doesn't comment on it if he finds the combination of his pajamas and the school jacket odd. ]
Where are we going? [ He's not certain if Yugi will tell him, because he's seen that determined look he's wearing, and something tells him that whatever Yugi has planned, he's not going to be forthcoming about it until they've already arrived. Part of him has a suspicion about his partner's plan, and another part of him wants to protest and insist he's not in the right mindset for going anywhere.
Still, he knows that Yugi can be stubborn when an idea takes hold, so for the moment, he holds his tongue. In the back of his mind, however, he's thinking about how he's already caused the individual he's certain Yugi's taking him to see enough trouble. She's insisted since the beginning that she wants to be there for him, to stand with him and help him navigate the darkness of his own mind, but shouldn't she have one night to herself? Just one night in which she doesn't have to prop up a lost soul like his... But what choice does he have? ]
I wanted to ask, knowing I have no right to ask anything more of you- [ He clenches his hands then, forming them into tight fists as he tries to force past the blockade that's preventing him from putting his request into words. Unfortunately, the words he wants to say have frozen in his throat, and the only sound he makes is one of frustration directed at himself. It seems as though every part of him, including the power of speech, is still rebelling, refusing to listen to his commands. ]

He closes the hotel door room behind him and starts walking down the hall. If he remembers right, she's on the same floor but in a different part of the building. Yugi found it strange she'd put so much distance between the group, but, now he wonders if it was her decision at all. The woman that is with her all the time seems to be the one that is making decisions based on her health. Can he disagree with that idea? It's what he's doing for Atem now. ]
I want you to ask me - even if you don't think you should. Go on.
[ Yugi turns his head to look at Atem, eyes narrowed, but a bright determination still in them. He isn't going to be as heavy handed or brutal as he was in their duel against one another to make his point. Instead, Atem has to contend with the fact that Yugi isn't going to back down from this.
He's learned how to be stubborn and stand the line he's drawn from the ancient Pharaoh.
Yugi turns the corner and starts down an other hallway. ]
Other Me. If you can't speak what it is inside you? Then, I'm going to get the help of someone that can help both of us figure this out.
no subject
By the time they reach that hallway, Atem begins to realize what Yugi's goal is here. He frowns, knowing that he could protest, but he won't be listened to, not in this instance.
He tries not to think about how guilty he'll feel at having disturbed Luna yet again, instead trying to focus on what he wants to ask his partner. ]
Yugi- [ He realizes he can actually speak his name without that swirling sense of shame threatening to pull him down and drown him. That has to be a start, right? ] I still carry a lot of turmoil inside me, as I'm sure you've realized.
[ He feels foolish saying this, because he knows it must be obvious to Yugi by now. ]
I wouldn't dream of putting my concerns on you, but I- I need your help. [ He knows how that'll sound, because Yugi's been trying to help him all along, but this is the first time he's allowed himself to ask for it from anyone. ]
no subject
He stops when Atem says his name with the normal conviction behind it. He turns back to his brother figure, eyes immediately meeting his. There's a calm quiet that rolls off him as Atem finally says it. Not that he needed to. Yugi's always known when Atem has needed help or a hand to walk him down a better path. He's never needed to ask for help, but, it shows to Yugi how much Atem is willing to act on his trust in others now.
A smile spreads over his face and he nods. ]
That's exactly what I'm going to do. I can't promise it's going to be easy. [ The things in life that someone truly wants have to be fought for and protected. Yugi learned that from his partner. He might not fight in the same way that his other self does, but, he's figured out the best way to express himself in dueling.
If only that duel had been the sort of duel the both of them wanted.
He turns back in the direction he was going and starts heading towards the room in question. ] I don't know everything you went through when I was gone. But, I think the Orichalcos took something from you that neither of us really understood at the time. So, we need to figure out how to get that back.
[ Yugi picks up the pace to the end of the hall. He turns once more, then counting the doors in the hallway. One, two.... third door. He raises his hand and gently knocks. It's late--nearly two in the morning. It wouldn't surprise him if Lunafreya is asleep at all. ]
no subject
I know it won't be easy. I'm not even sure where to begin. [ With forgiving himself, with letting others in who want to help him... He let Luna in when he was at his lowest, because he didn't have the will to protest otherwise. Now that he's slowly begun pulling himself out of the pit that he made for himself, he's unsure about how much he should let his friends in.
He's more willing to accept Yugi's help, oddly enough; in Lunafreya's case, well, he saw her get thrown around and injured, and she just seems exhausted. That's more than enough to cause him to not want to trouble her with his problems.
Yugi wants to help, and he wants to let him, but he also doesn't want to burden his friend and partner with his own doubts and fears. Would doing so be helpful to either of them? He isn't certain. ]
Do you think that's a possibility? [ The tables seem to have turned; Yugi seems to have more confidence now, and Atem seems to be the one who still is mired in a swamp of doubt. ] I thought that the Orichalcos woke up something that was present all along: the darkness that's inside my mind and my heart.
[ He doesn't want it to be that way, and part of him is striving even now to find the light that's also inside him so that he can beat that darkness back. ]
Whatever the case may be, I don't want to continue on like this. [ It's the first time that he's stated that feeling so plainly, but he knows this miserable state of being isn't what he wants.
He doesn't wish to lay these troubles onto Lunafreya either, but it's too late now. They're already at her door and Yugi's knocking. Now Atem's gaze drops to stare at the carpet that's lining the floor, because he feels guilt that they're disturbing Lunafreya, and probably Gentiana as well. ]
no subject
Something tells me that the Dartz's Musketeers weren't always the way they were when we met them. Like something had been taken away from them. Only the feelings that the Orichalcos could feed off would remain. What if something like that--
[ He's interrupted by the door opening. It doesn't open all the way, simply enough so that the face of the one who opened it can be seen. Yugi looks back to the door to see Gentiana wearing a disapproving expression. ]
--Gentiana...
Master Yugi, Pharaoh. [ Gentiana's head tilts towards Atem. Her eyes nearly ever shut, but it still seems like she can see him. ] What brings you here at such an hour?
We need to talk to Luna.
Master Yugi--
--I know she's been as holed up as the Other Me has, but, [ his fists clench as he raises his head with determination, ] she helped him when no one else could. Right? Now I need her advice to help him--
--I am not certain now is... [ Gentiana pauses and tilts her head back towards the room. A frown settles on her face before she bows her head. A second later the door opens wider to let the pair in.
Yugi nods to Atem for him to follow. 'Is it always this cold whenever Gentiana is around?'
Yugi steps into the room and makes sure he is to the side enough that Gentiana can close the door. Somehow, it's surprisingly large. Maybe that shouldn't be surprising. Lunafreya is nobility and has financed their whole trip. She deserves a large room. His eyes finally land on the bed where Lunafreya has pushed herself to sit up, one hand resting in her lap and the other holding her up. She's in a simple but somehow perfect nightgown for her. ]
Yugi-sama, Heika. What is bothering you?
[ Yugi frowns slightly then. He hadn't gotten a good look at her after that final battle with Dartz -- but he did notice how Atem hovered around her and Gentiana the whole helicopter trip back to Flordia. Honestly? She's a mess. There's a bruise around one of her eyes, several scrapes and what Yugi presumes are wounds that are bandaged. What sticks out the most to him is that arm that rests in her lap. It might have been set back in place, but, even Yugi can tell it was dislocated somewhere along the way.
A feeling of guilt creeps up into his heart. Especially under the cold gaze of Gentiana, despite the fact her eyes remained shut. Still, he's come this far and woken her up. It'd be rude to not tell her what's going on. ]
The Other Me isn't doing well. [ Yugi looks down at the floor with his eyes narrowed. ] I'm worried that even with Dartz put to rest, and the Leviathan taken care of, that ... something is still wrong. I don't know what it is though. He doesn't either.
[ Lunafreya tilts her head to the side, but her fingers twitch slightly at the strained motion. A glance is sent to Gentiana who nods. ]
What do you think is wrong, Heika? [ Lunafreya simply asks the question to the room, presuming that Atem is present with them. ]
no subject
But he figures that by coming here, all they're doing is disturbing someone who's earned her rest. It takes a monumental effort on his part, but he manages to pull himself out of his thoughts long enough to hear Yugi putting forward theories about the state of being of Dartz's men. It's as good a theory as any, even though Atem has nothing concrete to offer either. ]
Was something taken from them or was it someone? [ He doesn't really want to venture a theory on this topic, but what if what happened to him also happened to the three men who served Dartz? ] If they lost someone they cared about, could- Could what happened to me have happened to them?
[ Of course, there's no time for Atem to hear the answer to that, because Gentiana has just opened the door, and the temperature in the hallway drops considerably. He briefly meets Gentiana's sightless gaze (and yet, for one who is blind, she still seems to see more than those who still have their sight), but he's quick to look away as Yugi explains why they're here looking for Lunafreya. ]
Yes, it is. It could be the warmest day possible, and it would still feel cold when she is present.
[ He falls silent again as he follows Yugi slowly, reluctantly, into the room. He briefly scans the room, but it's Lunafreya who draws his attention. His heart sinks even further as he notes the bruise on her eye, the scrapes, the bandaged wounds...
He knew they shouldn't have troubled her, but now that he's seeing her condition for himself, it takes everything he has to stay present and not immediately retreat back into the puzzle.
Yugi's further explanation about himself and his mental state only makes him look even more intently at the ground. It's true, of course, but a part of him despises himself for being so weak.
Then, when Lunafreya's question comes, he finds himself unable to answer, merely shaking his head. He doesn't know what's wrong, why he still feels the same heaviness draping itself around him like a cloak. Yugi is back, everyone's souls have been restored, and even Dartz has found his redemption.
So why does he still feel so lost? ]
no subject
'I wonder why that happens. Do you think anyone else notices it?'
He presumes it has something to do with magic. What in their lives isn't related to that in some way? Lunafreya has never mentioned it, but, maybe she is just used to it? Yugi feels there is so much he still doesn't know about her and everything around her. Not that it's the time to let his thoughts wander on that.
Yugi looks to Atem. He doesn't mind relaying messages. How else can everyone communicate with him if they can't even see him? His expression softens as he watches Atem struggle. He raises his hand just slightly to try and gently encourage his other half to say something -- anything ...
'Other Me...' ]
... he doesn't know.
[ Lunafreya remains sitting and quiet for all but a moment. Then, she is pulling herself from the bed. Gentiana takes a step forward before Lunafreya holds her hand up. She is fine enough to travel across the room to speak with the pair.
Dressed the older style nightgown, Lunafreya gingerly makes her way to the two. She eases herself down, holding her hand up as well to Yugi's help. Once she is settled she raises her eyes to Yugi. He quietly nods to where Atem stands, and her gaze moves to the area he must be. There is a deep pang inside her heart that she is unable to see him then. ]
Yami, [ she says the name gently to get his attention. Her gaze softens in hopes he can see it. ] What can I do to help?
[ Yugi blinks at the name, but, remains quiet. When did she ever call his other self something other than heika? ]
no subject
Part of him wants to talk about anything else but the hurt he still feels deep inside himself, but judging from the look of determination he saw from Yugi on the way here, and from how Lunafreya moves herself from the bed to get closer to them when she shouldn't be moving at all, it seems as though he has no choice.
His hands clench tightly into fists as he tries desperately to find something that he can say to them. Yugi answers for him, of course, saying that he doesn't know, and he reaches out for Yugi, hoping to take his hand in his and draw some small amount of comfort or relief from him. Yugi's own well of strength is strong, whereas Atem's is all but depleted, but any contact with his beloved partner is enough to bolster some of his defenses again.
Lunafreya is still moving, drawing closer to where he stands, and he knows this must feel incredibly strange to her. She can't see him, only knowing where he might be standing, and yet she's trying to reach out to him anyway.
The use of the name he gave her so long ago (or at least, it feels as though it's been a long time) draws his attention, even as the weight he's carrying seems to grow to an unbearable level. He wouldn't dream of putting this weight onto anyone else, but for reasons he doesn't know, it's almost begun to feel like it's more than he can carry. ]
I- I don't know. [ The words finally spring unbidden from his lips, every bit as hesitant as he feels. ] I thought- I hoped that when Yugi returned, and when Dartz was stopped and every other soul that he took away also came back, everything would be all right once more.
[ He's finally speaking in full sentences, but the words he speaks are drawn hesitantly from out of him, and they all just feel wrong too. And then he looks briefly to Yugi, because this was an idea that he'd had. Could it be true? There's only one way to know. ]
Could the Orichalcos seal have taken something from me as well? [ Did it take something from him and not replace it? Or is the sheer brokenness that he feels a sign of his true weakness?
Perhaps the Egyptian gods and his entire deck were right to rebel, if he lacks the strength to direct them all.
They wanted him to talk, and while it was a struggle to even begin to find the right words for what he wanted to say, now that he's begun, a switch has flipped and now his concerns and fears are beginning to pour out of him like water from a fountain. ]
Perhaps I am not the man you all think that I am. [ And if that man regains his memories, will anything even change? ]

His instinct is to retreat into the Puzzle almost immediately, but then he sees how she dips her head lower, almost as if she's hiding her eyes again, and he decides that he can stand being in the physical world for a little while longer. He and Yugi eventually leave the room after saying good night to both Lunafreya and Gentiana, and the two of them make their way back down the hallway to the room they share. Well, it's Yugi's room, and Atem is just present in it.
At least, that's what he tells himself, because it's difficult for him to see the room and not remember how Lunafreya shared it with him in Yugi's absence. Perhaps it's only in his imagination, but even though she's no longer there, he still feels lingering traces of her presence.
Even so, he and Yugi have a task they have to see to, and after both of them get settled in the room again, it's time for them to begin the process of constructing their decks. At first, Atem hesitates, because perhaps Yugi wants to keep the cards he puts into his deck a secret. But the more he thinks about it, the more he realizes there are no secrets between himself and Yugi, and at least as far as he's concerned, he sees no reason to hide what cards he chooses from his partner. Of course, Yugi is free to build his deck in private, and Atem won't protest.
This duel could go either way, with either one of them winning, and he's convinced that the outcome won't be decided just because Yugi sees which cards he ends up picking.
The other thing that he's resolved to do is to give over control to Yugi, at least for the selection process of constructing his deck. As before, just as Yugi seamlessly switched places with Atem, he switches back, allowing Yugi to regain control while he returns to his ghostly form. ]
I'm ready to begin whenever you are, Yugi.
[ He expects that the switch will have taken Yugi by surprise, but the truth is that he feels more comfortable being in this form, at least for now. And, of course, he leaves it unsaid so as to avoid any protests, but at the moment, he believes Yugi has more right to being physically present, because he was the one who had his soul locked away for as long as he did. ]
no subject
He nods his good-bye to Gentiana and asks her to pass them along to Lunafreya as well. His mind is already going in the direction of what cards he wants to use that he doesn't realize they've returned to their room until Atem switches with him. Yugi blinks, looking down at himself and the Puzzle. He turns his head to look at Atem with a bit of surprise in his eyes. ]
...You don't mind if I see what's in your deck?
[ That is what catches him by surprise more than anything. Then again, maybe that's not a bad thing. This duel is less about winning and surprising one another than it is the two re-discovering how the game is meant to be fun. They don't need to brainstorm strategies for a competitive setting now. If anything... they can just test things and see what might happen.
He goes over to the luggage and opens it, pulling the extra deck of cards out of where he's packed it. Then, he grabs their deck from the Duel Disk, and turns both face up as he sits down. His hands go to the top of their used and extra decks, expertly fanning both out with a single motion. Yugi will always say that Atem is the better of the two, even if he's an experienced and intelligent duelist himself.
Off goes the school jacket as he nods for Atem to make himself comfortable. ]
no subject
When Yugi asks him that question, he gives his partner a small smile. ]
Of course I don't. You and I have no secrets, not even when it comes to dueling.
[ His smile widens just a fraction as he adds: ] And even if you do see what cards I choose, I could still surprise you, just as I'm sure you'll manage to surprise me.
[ And so he sits back and watches as Yugi pulls out the extra deck and their regular deck as well. ]
I suppose that we should also decide on any ground rules before we begin.
[ Of course he's aware that both of them are fair duelists and are absolutely not in the habit of stooping to questionable methods or even cheating, but he wants to give Yugi the opportunity to lay down any rules for the duel ahead of time, just in case there's anything his partner wants or doesn't want. ]
no subject
Just like now. Yugi can tell that Atem is still unsure, hesitant, and maybe even a bit fearful of what might happen next. Which is why all he can do is metaphorically grab Atem's hand and walk with him down the path. He's sure that eventually he'll be left behind again to catch up. That is just how it is with being next to a figure as powerful and full of presence as the once Egyptian Pharaoh. ]
Maybe. I think I know most of your tricks.
[ There's a playful look in his eyes at that. Oh, he's sure there are plenty of tricks that Atem can manage to think up if he gets going. That's part of the fun of it all.
He pauses to think about that. Ground rules? Usually he goes with what the tournament or base game of Duel Monsters plays by. That's thee best place to start. ]
Well, it isn't holograms or a tournament, right? The base rules might be a good place to start with then. 2,000 Life Points, no more than three copies of a card in a single deck. [ They usually don't play that way anyways. It's generally Kaiba that has three of one particular card. ] A standard deck size of forty cards?
[ Yugi looks at the spirit sitting beside him. ] ... How do we want to handle the God Cards?
no subject
And now that he's back, he knows he doesn't want to hold anything back from him ever again. It's one of the few things he knows with any certainty, which is probably why he's grabbing onto it so hard. And, well, if Yugi offers him his hand, either physically or metaphorically, he'll hold tightly onto that as well.
He's resolved that he never wants to be separated from him again, if he has anything to say about it at all. And as for the path that he's going down, he intends for them to walk it together for as long as they can. ]
By now, we should both know each other's tricks. But- [ A brief glint shines in Atem's own eyes, but it disappears quickly. ] There are always new tricks to be made.
[ He falls silent again then as he listens and nods along to the terms Yugi suggests. ] Those sound like fair rules to me.
[ But then Yugi mentions the God Cards, and for a moment, Atem's expression turns pensive. But just as quickly as it changed, it changes again into something with resolve. ]
I think the God Cards should be made off-limits for this duel.
no subject
That's the least he can do until he can restore the Pharaoh's lost memories. ]
That sounds like a challenge, Other Me. [ One that he is willing to take on. The smirk stays on his face until his gaze falls back onto the cards fanned out in front of them.
The God Cards.
Yugi knows that technically they've won them together. Yet, they've always felt like they belong to Atem. Rather, they'd answer Atem and not him. That's fine. He needs things that are uniquely his even if he shares Yugi's body. That is something Yugi will keep insisting on no matter what: cards, games, time with Lunafreya. All of those things are unique to the Pharaoh and he needs his own time with them.
He reaches forward and collects them. He can't sense their emotions as well as Atem or Lunafreya might, but even he can tell there is something not right about how they sit in his hand. Two of them seem ... frustrated? Irritated? He can't really tell. The third, though, Ra. He can feel an anger off the golden card that sends an uncomfortable shock up his back. The scar that once was cold thanks to Gentiana now burns slightly.
Yugi glances up at Atem with a silent question: can he sense it too? He doesn't hold onto the cards very long though. He folds the three of them up and puts them to the side. His hand curls slightly as he waits for the sensation on those healed scars to dissipate. ]
Alright. We'll need to tell the rules to Gentiana tomorrow night, but, that shouldn't be a problem. [ Gentiana has been present for a handful of duels. She should understand the basics well enough to be able to follow Atem's instructions. ] You get to pick first.
[ He already has some ideas of what ones he isn't going to use. So, it's better to see which cards Atem feels comfortable with. ]
no subject
But Yugi has reassured him time and again about that, and while it's a daily thing, he's just decided to choose to believe that one day, their ease around each other will return. They may not even notice it when it does, but it will happen someday. ]
Perhaps it is. After all, it's difficult to have a duel without challenges.
[ And he absolutely does not mean challenges such as the ones that Malik and Dartz put them through. This is a duel for fun, something Atem has to keep reminding himself about, and the only challenge they'll face is the twists and turns both of them throw at each other as the duel plays itself out.
Atem watches as Yugi picks up the God Cards. He can still sense the emotions practically boiling off of each card; two of them have simmered down somewhat, leaving only frustration and a small amount of resentment behind. But Ra is another matter entirely. The anger emanating from the card is difficult to miss, and as Atem watches Yugi hold the card, he eyes it with apprehension. It's only a card; the god hasn't been summoned, and yet Atem still finds himself nervous about it.
Perhaps the only way to appease Ra's lingering wrath is to face him alone, with neither Yugi nor Lunafreya (or Kaiba) present to put themselves forward as targets. If the god needs to rage or send out bolts of fire, then perhaps he should give him the opportunity to do that. It's something he files away for another time.
As for picking his first card, he hesitates. Should he choose a monster card, a trap card, or even a magic card? He supposes that any magic or trap cards he picks should mesh with his deck, so he decides to pick a few monsters before he chooses his other cards.
Spotting Koumori Dragon amongst the cards that Yugi has spread out for them both, he decides to choose that one first. He already knows that he intends to use Dark Magician, because he's never gone into a duel without that particular card. But he needs other monsters to round out the deck, so he also has in mind Dark Magician Girl, Summoned Skull, the three Magnet Warrior cards, and a variety of trap and magic cards to round out his forty chosen cards as well. ]
Your turn to choose, Yugi.
no subject
Yugi wordlessly puts together the cards that Atem picks. It's clear to tell which cards could compliment which ones, but, he isn't going to say anything. Once the forty cards are picked, he fans them between his hands to hold up for the final approval. Once it's met, Yugi folds the deck back up and places it to the side.
His deck. Despite the excitement? It's a little strange to go through cards without the input of his other self. It can't be the strategy deck they normally run without it being too obvious. Toy Box, Toy Magician, Toy Solider, Apple Magician Girl, Lemon Magician Girl, and Gandora the Dragon of Destruction. All that follows are the cards that will compliment them. Some of them are ideas he's had, but put to the side in favor of the ones that Atem normally picks.
He might as well test them out now.
Yugi fans his own deck between his hands as he looks the cards over. It's as good as anything. There's cards he wishes he had to improve it... maybe once they get back to Japan he'll look into that. If nothing else? There's a smile on his face as he has worked on it. ]
... I don't have a mat for us to put our cards on. [ That fact just dawns on him now. Everything has been used digitally by the cards that something as simple as a table mat has gone unnoticed. He sighs and leans backwards, head resting on the mattress of the bed. ] I guess we won't need one.

meanwhile, in kaibaland (reraligns this to stargazing woops)
Even if he has inherited every single damn sin his adopted father committed. He'll right those wrongs as he goes on in his life. He has plans to change the direction of the world into something better. Even if most people can't see the long path he walks to do so.
What he has no idea of is the fact that he did the same in his previous life. High Priest - no Pharaoh Set - would not see Egypt undone by Shadow Games. Not at the potential risk of unleashing that which had been sealed away. It was a massive upheaval of how all Egypt had worked, but, the Kingdom survived through another two thousand years. That was what mattered.
Now, he has turned in his office chair to look out at the night sky of Domino City. The moon is large and bright with most of the city light drowning out the stars. His computers are on and running around him as usual. Mokuba is already safe and sound asleep in bed. It has now left Kaiba in his own in the office in the mansion. with just the moon as his companion as he thinks over the latest events.
Doma, Dartz, Atlantis, Orichalcos. Kaiba might deny to the world around him at face value that magic does not exist. The occult is merely there for people set in the past to ramble on about how the world has to be stagnant. He knows better and has known for some time. It is simply easier to deny it with those around him than anything else. He has been aware that there is another soul that lurks inside Yugi -- and that is the soul that is his rival. One that seems to have been his rival for thousands of years. At one point he would deny it. That, however, is more difficult with the scar of burns on his lower arm and the woman he made contact with on the duel field that day.
His eyes drop down to his arm to gaze at the healed wound. Sometimes it aches and the hair on the back of his neck stands up. The pain from Ra's hatred seems burned into his mind. He has to wonder if Yugi and the spirit of the Pharaoh feel something similar. After all, they had taken the blast from Ra during Battle City. Kaiba frowns only to look back at the moon and lean to the side in the chair with his elbow supporting most of his weight.
Moving forward without looking back when the past so clearly grips onto him and refuses to let go. Or, maybe, some part of him refuses to let it go. There's a connection between that woman and the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. To think he'd only care for a card because of something he can't even remember. He wishes he still found it ridiculous.
Kisara.
Her name still feels perfectly familiar and normal to say out loud or in his mind. As if she is some missing piece of him in the same way that Mokuba is. ]
hoho we do what we want
Now, however, in this space that is solely his, she appears as her true self: a woman with long white hair and large blue eyes that watch him as he surveys the night sky above him. She believes that most people understand the man called Seto Kaiba. He's ambitious, yes, and incredibly driven to see his goals met, but alongside all of that, he has a heart. It isn't often seen, or perhaps people simply don't look for it, but Kisara believes that she has seen it.
She also believes that he will achieve every goal that he's set for himself, and surpass even his own expectations. For the moment, she remains silent, merely watching him as he examines the stars, but then she notes when he moves and his eyes drop down to the healed scar on his arm. Everything about him concerns her, but that wound, even if it is healed, still causes her worry. There's little she can do to ease his discomfort, of course, but she worries about him nonetheless.
As she watches him, it seems to her that the air in the room changes as his thoughts turn towards the past that he struggles to accept and to reconcile with. She can only imagine how difficult it must be for him, but she can also see that he's beginning to carve out a small space for it in his life, however reluctantly he does so.
As always, she stays silent, sometimes standing a distance away from him; other times, she stands closer, but she never wants to disturb him or cause him undue surprise or upset if he notices that she is present. Sometimes it seems that he isn't in the mood, either because of the stresses of his work day, or simply because he's out of patience for things relating to the past. Part of him seems to still look on those things with impatience or even hostility, and it's during those times that she refrains from making herself known.
There are still other times when she wishes to reach out but finds herself unable to do so. The magic surrounding the cards and herself is strange, even fickle, and she too has to follow its rules, even when they don't make sense.
Now, though, she looks up when he speaks her name in his mind. Is that an invitation or an opening? She isn't sure, but she decides that she will take her chances. She moves closer to where he sits, and she slowly and very gently places her hand on his shoulder. If he rebuffs her, she'll withdraw, but she has to at least attempt this much before she can know what to do. ]
not that kaiba will approve hauaaha
Was she there every time he summoned the Blue-Eyes White Dragon?
Kaiba turns to look at her properly. The last time he sensed her was outside the temple Dartz had holed himself up in. He could tell that she - the dragon - was furious with him. Is there a point in arguing? The spirit of the Pharaoh needed to survive. Not out of some altruistic idea of saving the world, but, Kaiba can't surpass him if he doesn't exist.
That need to surpass and finally prove himself to be better than the Pharaoh runs deep. He thought it came from being beaten one too many times. No. It is something far more ancient that clings to his soul like a wet blanket. If only he understood why. ]
I didn't think you'd show yourself again.
hahaha but does he approve of anything?
Whenever she is able, she tries to be there to watch over him, mostly for her own peace of mind, but also because the times that they manage to transcend the spaces between them are some of the most memorable, at least in her mind.
And to some degree, she is still furious with him, but nearly everything can be forgiven, and she isn't the type of person who remains angry or holds a grudge. She may not like what he did, but his reasons were his own and Kisara has no intention of judging him for any of it.
Tilting her head, she surveys him with those large eyes of hers. ]
Do you want me to leave you?
[ She wouldn't, at least not for good. She cares too much about him to obey that particular command, if he were to give it.
And after a moment's pause, she adds: ]
I will always be near, until you no longer wish for me to do so. [ But then he would have to no longer summon the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and she can't imagine him ever coming to that point.
Or, she supposes, she could simply refrain from reaching out to him as she's doing right now. ]
some things >.> <.<
Pathetic and embarrassing for himself. Being used like some tool by a damn Duel Monster... ]
No. [ A short quick answer.
Kaiba pushes himself to stand up. He still towers over her as he did three thousand years ago. It's familiar and comforting to a degree, even if he is still struggling with the concept of it all on some level. He raises the scared hand, moving to place the tips of his fingers on her cheek.
Part of him expects it to go right through her as if she's some ghost he's conjured up due to a lack of sleep. ]
I wonder what those things could be >.>
And she can't help but feel worry for him, not simply because of the injury he sustained from Ra, but for other reasons as well. He is so proud, insisting that he doesn't need to rely on anyone, but even though she knows he's very strong, even the strongest have their moments of weakness. ]
All right, if that's what you want. [ She knows that she'd stay with him even if he said he didn't want her to, just in a form that he couldn't see. She can still watch over him even if she isn't materialized in front of him, after all.
When he raises his hand, placing his fingers against her cheek, she smiles. It might look different if they were being observed, but to her, she feels his touch against her skin, and it sends off little pulses of electricity. Again, how this is possible, she isn't sure, but as before, she isn't questioning it. ]
You must have a lot on your mind. [ If she could take some or all of that from him so that he might rest, she would. ]
brother.... dragon wife.... dragon deck....
I always have something on my mind. [ His company, his responsibility, Mokuba, dueling, defeating Yugi and the Pharaoh... now her. ] Right now, I'm trying to figure out how this is possible.
How you're here. [ Everything he has seen of the distant past implies she died and not due to natural causes. How is she tied to the Blue-Eyes White Dragon? ] Why you're here. It's more than just because you're "watching" over me.
Why don't you tell me what happened? How I can have these memories, and how Yugi ties into all this.
oh, those... I see.... also 100% winging this
I'm not sure how it is that I'm here. [ She has to admit that, because she truly doesn't know. How is she here, watching over someone who both is and isn't similar to the Seto she knows? ] I am sure that there's a reason far greater than just that, but what if I'm here because I want to watch over you?
[ He's free to reject her, of course, even though she hardly knows what she would do if he did. ]
I can't tell you everything that you ask... [ Simply because she barely knows herself. ] But I believe that you have these memories because you are more than just Seto Kaiba, much more.
[ He is himself, of course; that doesn't need to be said. He is no shadow of the priest turned pharaoh from so long ago, but rather, he is his own man. And yet, Kisara believes she can see traces of Kaiba's ancient ancestor from time to time. The past still lives, combining with the present to create something complicated but powerful.
Still, Kisara knows her answer won't satisfy him. Most likely, nothing that she says will, and she can already hear him dismissing her, telling her she's only speaking in riddles. It's a sentiment that she agrees with, because she isn't sure how plainly she ought to speak.
As for the role Yugi plays, that is also complicated and yet simple, but she worries about how much she ought to tell him, because doing so might only upset him more. ]
who needs memory world when she can tell him things >.>
