INSOMNIA
( cont from here )
[ Lunafreya nods in confirmation. Her family had not always been nobility, but had in fact been regarded highly. At some point they had married into nobility and their path had been set from there. Although, she is not sure that her bloodline would have continued on if they hadn't married into royalty. Turmoil had always set in, and seemed to only escalate once they had moved past the ancient times. ]
Yes. Though, I doubt you would find any news of them in the wide scale public news these days. [ Not since her mother's death. Her brother's marriage did little to garner attention, but, perhaps that was for the best. ] The status of noble hardly matters in today's modern era.
[ The minds of his friends being trapped? Her gaze wanders to the side as she ponders. That is certainly beyond what she is capable of healing. Her skill set was far removed from this conversation and she aimed to keep it that way. Atem had enough to weigh down on his shoulders. The last he needed was the awareness of her true title and full scope of her duty. He most certainly had a plan in mind to reverse the state his friends were in regardless. ]
Seto Kaiba is the one who has created the level of augmentation, has he not? [ Her expressions settles into something of a serious nature. She may not know the rules of this card game, or how to play it, but she certainly knows the names attached to it. It was brought to her attention after the tournaments grew far too popular. ] The game is far too dangerous to be treated the way it is -- regardless if technology had not been introduced. It would have been better if Maximilian Pegasus had never created it.
[ The drop of formality around the creator of the game certainly does not imply familiarity. Quite the opposite. Lunafeya believes the man to be a naive visionary who refused to see how ignorant he had become. The details of the Egyptian Gods are not ones she knows, but, she would be far from surprised to learn of such things. Enough of the creatures in the game are depictions of real ones.
She glances over the menu before giving him a gentle smile. ]
Chamomile tea.

[ He forms a point with his index fingers as he mulls over this latest bit of information about Luna and her family. ] I'm sure that whether they feature in the news or not, your family still has a place carved out for themselves, both in the news and in the world.
[ And truthfully, if Atem could set things right and bring back the minds and souls of his friends, he would have already. Being powerless is not something he's used to, but he feels as though he's been rendered that way by Marik and his intrigues. ]
Yes, he is. His ideas and his- Inventions, I suppose you might call them, have only grown and changed in the time that I've known him.
[ And he can't claim to have any sort of in-depth understanding of how they all work, not like Kaiba does. ]
I can't help but agree with you about Pegasus and the creation of the games. They may be seen as mere games, and in fact, they were originally called Shadow Games.
[ He shakes his head just slightly and lets out an exhale of breath he didn't know he was holding in. ]
They may be called that, but there is nothing frivolous or light-hearted about them.
[ So yes, Atem would agree with Luna's assessment of Pegasus and his naivete. ]
I'll have that myself, then. [ He's the last person who would claim to be acquainted with tea and its varieties, but if Luna enjoys that particular flavor, then he supposes it's worth a try. And with that decision made, he waves to get the attention of a server, and places their order. ]

We have some place in history and I believe we always shall -- regardless if those around us truly understand the value of that. [ She would shrug to such a thing, but the comment about Seto Kaiba perks her interest. ] You know him beyond being the one who holds the tournament?
[ If she had followed the world of dueling, then, perhaps she would not be surprised to hear a thing. However, like many things in the world, Lunafreya considers herself an outlier. She merely looks in and watches it as it happens. A step into that world happens when she is needed, otherwise, she remains at the borders and observes.
Her expression sets as he so easily brings up Shadow Games. It is the tone of someone who has survived many and intends to keep battling through them. He must truly understand the scope of the battle... even if he may not know what might be done with the card game. ]
I am relieved to hear that at least one duelist is aware of the origins of this game. One who takes it quite seriously at that.
[ Even if her expression might combat the gentleness of her tone. Lunafreya turns as the waitress joins them and welcomes them. She glances at Atem to see if he might change his mind before he places the order. It takes her by surprise that he would order the same, but, it is only a small detail to note. Her hands rest gently on the tabletop once the woman has walked away. The golden armlets make a soft chink as they rest on the surface. ]
At what time does your tournament begin again in the morning?
no subject
As for whether or not they will meet again, he knows that time and circumstance have a funny way of bringing people together. At least, he's learned to not write anything off as impossible. But there is the simple fact that there is very little reason for them to speak again. She has her own responsibilities and he has is, and this meeting between them might as well be just a fluke.
They have until they finish their tea, however, which is more than enough time for them to talk. ]
We met when we were both participants in another tournament. It seems like so long ago now, but I suppose that is because so much has happened in the years between.
[ His expression, already serious, turns even more pensive as he surveys the table in front of him. ]
I can't imagine an instance in which I wouldn't take it seriously, with or without the game's origins.
[ There is more on the line here than he thinks she knows, and he hasn't even divulged half of its seriousness to her, because why should he cause someone unnecessary concern? He knows he's carrying enough of that for the two of them.
He gives her a brief glance in return, but he leaves his tea order unchanged. It isn't much of a method of choosing, but he imagines that if she likes that particular tea, then there must be a reason behind it. ]
I believe it begins fairly early. Around 9:30 in the morning, if I'm remembering correctly. Seto Kaiba isn't one to waste time.
no subject
I see... rivals until the end? [ Her expression eases into a smile then. Of course, she has no idea how apt of a description she has given. ] How long have you been playing this game?
[ Serious regardless of the game's origins? Lunafreya admits to herself that she is unable to fully relate to it. Her calling is so much grander than what some might call a hobby... but then, so many people involve their lives into this game. It is to the point where an entire city hardly minds becoming a battleground, and more than willingly accommodates those who participate. Perhaps he is in that group of people. If had it had just been a card game, he would be a professional at it and strive to play it no matter what. It seems like a much simpler life than the one he is given.
The thin chains on her armlets shuffle against the counter as she worries her fingers together. Her gaze drops as she ponders their entire conversation over thus far. Once or twice her eyes drift to the window to look outside at the quiet city.
Seto Kaiba. She makes a note to meet with him. While she highly doubts such a confrontation would go well, it should be done regardless. She has enough connections to be able to have a meeting with the man that runs the tournament. If he'd see her at all is something else. Her family name is enough to have political weight behind it. Something like this with one who refuses to believe something? That is another beast entirely. ]
And you will be able to contend at such a high level with little sleep?
no subject
Either way, there is something compelling about her that makes him want to enjoy this conversation for as long as it lasts. ]
You might call it that, yes. [ Between himself and Kaiba, Kaiba's always been the one who pursued dueling him with an almost relentless persistence. And of course, he can't deny that Kaiba is a very skilled duelist in his own right. There's very little doubt in his mind that he deserves the reputation that he has, whether or not he agrees with his ruthless tactics, both pertaining to dueling and to life.
When a brief silence falls between them, Atem takes this moment to surreptitiously examine Luna. Not for any untoward reason, but because there is something different about her that has piqued his curiosity. Of course, he can't read minds nor thoughts, so all he gains from his surveying of her is external knowledge, but even that can be telling.
But then she speaks again, and he pulls himself back to the present. ]
Of course. I- [ How to explain that he's a spirit living inside a mystical item, and he takes control of his friend and partner's body during duels and other times as well? ] I don't need very much sleep.
no subject
I see. You seem to be fond of the notion.
[ There is nothing that leads her to think that other than the way he speaks of it. He certainly thinks highly of himself and his capabilities to play this game. That is something that must be there if he believes himself the only one able to stop the darkness he senses. Perhaps, then, the air of confidence is rather earned. ]
I am not sure if that is a blessing or not.
[ She closes her eyes to think on it as her fingers toy with one another. a small nervous habit, but, far better than biting her nails or scratching. She has needed sleep more often as her duties as Oracle have been more taxing. Perhaps that is why being up at such a late hour is strange to her. She sleeps when she can.
Lunafreya only looks up when the tea is brought to them. She smiles thankfully, bowing her head once more in thanks. For now, her hands settle on the warm cup as she looks back out the window at the street. How many people will be racing in the morning for this tournament that her temporary companion is apart of? ]
no subject
In the case of Luna, he has no right to hope that they'll meet again, but he views this encounter as one of those that is so memorable, it lingers in perfect clarity that time can't even diminish. ]
Do I? I suppose that's true. And to answer your question, it has been some time since I first dueled. [ Or rather, since Yugi made his first deck, since he is only a visitor, a specter from the past. ]
The game was not always like this, as I previously mentioned. [ Before the likes of Pegasus came up with the high technology with his dueling arenas and other technological advances, the game was just a card game, with no holographic monsters or other special effects. And there's also how the game was played in ancient Egypt. Either way, the point is that the game has evolved considerably over the years. ]
What makes you say that?
[ He's not actually physically present, unless he's taken over control from Yugi as he has right now. Spirits from the past do not require sleep, after all.
Neither do they require sustenance in the form of food or drink, but even he has to admit that the times when he does have the opportunity to consume something, it's not an unpleasant experience at all. Right now, for instance. He eyes the cup in front of him with curiosity, noting how Luna's hands are wrapped around it, and not realizing just how warm the surface of his own cup actually is.
Of course he knows that tea is a hot drink, and thus any vessel containing it is bound to be a similar temperature, but he underestimated just how hot it actually was. He surreptitiously pulls his hand away from the cup and blows on it once or twice, hoping she hasn't noticed his mistake.
He doesn't blush, not usually, but there might be the slightest hint of red creeping up the back of his neck. But does he let even a hint of embarrassment show on his face? Not a chance. ]
no subject
I imagine having a rival would be something very precious. [ She raises a finger to trail along the edge of her cup and closes her eyes. ] Someone that is there to push you to become better. It may not be the same as having a mentor, but, it is someone to make you strive for new heights; to expand the horizon of what you are truly capable of.
That is not something I have been blessed with.
[ The purpose of the Oracle is not to strive for power or connections with the spirits to wage power over one another. Harmony, balance. It is something that seems to shock those that do know her station and calling. The concept has always been foreign to Kings and Queens. Perhaps that is why, for a time, the Oracles were revered and allies. ]
Sleeping gives one the chance to rest; to ease themselves of the burdens on their shoulders even for a few hours. Without it our bodies begin to buckle under the weight of it all. [ She pauses. ] I sound far older than I am by that reasoning, do I not?
[ Lunafreya opens her eyes just in time to witness the embarrassing gesture. She blinks once, then twice, before a genuine smile touches the face. For but a brief moment the girl shows through the face of the Oracle -- even if her late night companion can hardly tell the difference.
She laughs gently.
It is a small gesture that she believes to be rather quiet and unnoticeable. ]
Touch it with the tips of your fingers first, [ she moves her hands in the manner she explains. ] Once you are accustomed to the temperature, then you can hold it.
no subject
But he has no personal memories of his own, and that is something that bothers him more than he cares to let on about.
But then he chuckles with amusement. ]
I'm sure that if you asked Kaiba, he would not use those exact words.
[ Annoyance, a headache, a thorn in his side- those all seem more like words Seto Kaiba would use to describe their relationship, or the lack of one. ]
But I can't pretend that Kaiba hasn't been responsible for pushing me to challenge myself, and although he's the last person who would admit it, he may very well feel the same way.
[ He gives her a thoughtful look. ]
There has been no one who's spurred you to expand your own horizons? [ That's unfortunate, but he also knows that it's possible for people to be their own motivation and driving force.
But then again, not knowing very much about Oracles, he wonders if that isn't a primary goal that they possess. ]
I agree with you, but- [ He hesitates then, wondering how much about himself and his arrangement with Yugi he ought to share.
So instead, he focuses in on his gaffe with the tea, realizing that she's most likely questioning why he's so seemingly inexperienced or at least unaware of how to properly hold a mug. ]
I understand. [ And then he does as she's explained, finding that this method works much better. ] Thank you.
no subject
[ That is how it works, is it not? One game is abandoned for another that takes the world by force. Sometimes games will linger on and pass from one to the next. Although, given the nature of this game, Lunafreya is not entirely certain it will be forgotten. It is an ancient game reinvented for the modern era.
It may happen again. Time and time again.
Humanity never really learns from their mistakes. ]
No. [ Her answer is quick and to the point. Lunafreya opens her eyes to look down at the tea in her hands. A distant expression passes over her eyes then. There is much in her life that one might consider normal that has passed her by. ] My own comes from necessity of my task and ... job. Nothing more than that.
[ Although a duty and calling is hardly the same as a job.
The wonder has crossed her mind. Then again, perhaps she simply holds things in a foreign manner than he does. Perhaps he is too enthralled in their conversation to have realized how hot the cup is. There are a thousand possibilities and she has no intention of digging further into them. She raises her own cup then, still contently holding it in her hands, enjoying the warmth it gives off. ]
When this tournament ends, will you join another?
no subject
It's something that Atem feels he and Kaiba will never see eye to eye about. There are more important things in life, but he knows better than to try and convince Kaiba to see that. ]
I hope for that as well. He is very driven and determined to have his goals met, but that determination often blinds him to what is really important.
[ But true change can't be forced; it has to come from one's own conscious decision to do so, and Atem can't help but feel that Kaiba believes himself to be content being the way he is. After all, he can't know what he's missing if he believes he's not missing anything except the fame he's chasing after. ]
That's- [ He hesitates, wanting to find the right words while also not offending her. ] That's something of a shame. Everyone needs companionship and support, regardless of what their calling in life is.
[ He surveys the still steaming liquid contained by the mug as he contemplates her question and his response. ]
Most likely. [ Both he and Yugi are not very good at turning down a challenge when it presents itself, and although he can't foresee what the next tournament might be like, he knows they'll be hard pressed to not be tempted by it.
However, he supposes that both of them could use a period of rest following this particular tournament. ]
Or perhaps we'll decide that we need to stop and regroup before joining another one.
[ Even he can't see the twists and turns that lie ahead, but even the most straightforward of tournaments requires significant energy and focus. ]
no subject
[ If Atem looks close enough, he might just see the flicker of sadness that crosses her face then. His words were not taken with offense. No, instead, Lunafreya very much recognizes the truth in his words. One does need companionship and support. Hers comes in the form of her longest friend and two furry companions. Yet, even then, Lunafreya is very aware of how separated from the world she is. ]
Some in this world are not blessed to have that. [ She lifts her gaze and offers a comforting smile even if her eyes say otherwise. ] You are fortunate, Yami-sama, in so many ways. Friends to strive to protect, a rival to push you forward, and a destiny in mind. You should chase after those - no matter what may stay in your path to stop you.
[ Envy is far from her nature, but, Lunafreya will admit to herself that she has often wished for something that is similar to what he's expressed. Someone to accompany and support -- people to return to. She has seen the joyous reunions of friend, families, lovers as she has healed them. Each time she feels that pang of loneliness, but knows that ultimately, it is apart of her calling.
She finally closes her eyes and drinks from her cup. It warms her from the inside, despite the fact the night is hardly cold. Summers in Japan have always been said to be warm and rather humid. A few minutes pass before she speaks again. ]
Ever battling forward. You truly are someone that forges ahead on his path.
no subject
I wouldn't be against such a thing, but I would have to get Kaiba to slow down long enough for us to talk about it. [ He shrugs, knowing it's not impossible, but still very difficult. And yes, he's aware of the particular irony of that statement. He's faced many difficult duels before, never really backing down from any of them, but it's the prospect of talking plainly with Kaiba that seems the most challenging. ]
Perhaps it isn't your ultimate goal in being here, but you may find yourself forming friendships while you are here. One, or even many, may cross your path even if you aren't chasing after them yourself. [ He doesn't mean to sound as though he's telling her what she should do; he's only echoing her sentiments as a sort of gentle reminder for herself as well. He recognizes that it may not be possible within the confines of her own duties, but still: he hopes that friends and maybe even a rival, if she truly desires that, will come her way.
Little does he know....]I feel as though that path is both my duty and my destiny, and now that I've started, I must complete it, to whatever end.
[ He pauses then so he can drink from his own cup and enjoy the taste of the warm liquid. ]
no subject
[ She nods in understanding to his statement then. One rival is constantly striving to catch up to the other and thus will never listen. What a complex relationship to have around a simple card game. She wonders if that was an unexpected consequence of the sort of game that Pegasus has built based off of ancient ways. Then again, humans have quite the ability to add complexity to anything that they do.
The smile of hers barely curls at his reinforcement of her own words. Perhaps. She certainly wishes to bridge the gap between family friends, but, even that is a complex matter. How aware was Mr. Mutou of what her grandparents were attempting to do? Was he apart of it, or, simply there for the thrill of adventure? She knows that her own mother sent out an invitation to their funeral but Lunafreya had never heard the answer. It is quite a lot for her to presume she may even be successful in bridging the families. Perhaps they fell out of conversation for a reason she was never fully aware of.
If only both of them knew what is on the horizon...]Maybe.
[ It's a soft one word statement that holds a heavy weight. Lunafreya looks back out the window with the smile disappearing from her face. ]
Then, I will need to add a prayer of your success for your own sake to that of your friends. Reaching ones destiny should fill them with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.
no subject
[ He sets down his cup, which is mostly empty by now, and he also looks toward the window. ]
It's growing late now. [ Or later. ] I think that I've kept you long enough, although it has been very good talking with you.
[ He places a little emphasis on that, because he doesn't want her to think he's looking for a reason to leave. ]
Perhaps we'll meet again, but for now: I could walk with you back to where you're staying.
[ That's something people do for each other, isn't it? He thinks Yugi's done that before. At least he figures he can make the offer, and she can either accept or turn it down. ]
look at us finishing threads, accomplished writers here. YUH
It is only hours later when Yugi snaps awake, throwing himself up in bed. The sun has already risen and he looks at the phone beside the bed for the time. Nine o'clock. ]
Damn it!
[ A rare curse from the young man, but, he's late. Not only is he late but he's late in a tournament. They still have to get the rest of the locator cards to even make it to the last rounds. By "they", of course, he means himself and the other him. The spirit that is housed in the Millennium Puzzle that has one too many sleepless nights. ]
Other Me, why didn't you say something?!
[ Ah, yes, as if an ancient spirit is an alarm clock for a teenager.
Yugi is speeding through getting dressed. T-shirt, pants, belt with his and Atem's deck. Then phone, Millennium Puzzle that hangs off the post on the headboard, and Duel Disk. He throws the bedroom door open and is practically skipping every other step to get down the stairs.
Nope, it hasn't occurred quite yet for him to check his missed calls or text messages. Nor has it really occurred to him that the front of the house where the shop is housed hasn't been opened yet either. He slides on the kitchen floor to the fridge. Right, grab something to eat on the way out. ]
'Yugi, slow down!'
I can't, Grandpa. I'm late! [ He grabs a rice cracker packet. ] Joey is already waiting, and we're already behind--
--'Yugi. Surely the tournament can wait, we have a guest!'
You know it can't! There's... [ Yugi finally stops as he shuts the door to the fridge.
He looks over to see his Grandpa at the kitchen table, arms crossed and looking disappointed in his grandson's behavior. Yugi glances over at where he feels Atem might be, before looking back at the table to see their guest. When is the last time they had a guest that isn't a customer or one of his friends? He realizes that the moment the guest turns to look at him.
She's really pretty is the first thing that comes to Yugi's mind. Blond hair that is pulled back into a loose braid, striking blue eyes, dressed in a black dress, black boots, and white over jacket tied in the front. Her eyes meet his and he sudden stands rigid for a reason he can't explain. His confusion is only matched by a look of surprise on her own face. Then, the guest turns back to Solomon as if looking for an explanation.
Solomon sighs. ] 'This is my grandson, Yugi. Yugi, introduce yourself properly!'
Oh--right, sorry, uhm. [ He gives a brief bow. ] I'm Yugi Mutou. It's nice to meet you.
[ Their guest bows oddly deeply. The surprise has melted off her face except her eyes. Maybe she's surprised to see him because he technically is famous? Well, his other half is famous, but... ]
no subject
I thought that you needed your sleep, and if it's the tournament you're worried about, well- [ He merely shrugs. ] There's time enough for us to make it there and to get what we need to continue our participation.
[ As he's previously mentioned, even if Yugi isn't aware of it, he doesn't really require sleep, but the fact remains that Yugi does, and if they're going to win this tournament, he needs to be in peak condition. And that includes having had enough rest. To anyone else, allowing Yugi to sleep in might have appeared irresponsible, but Atem didn't particularly care about how he looked to anyone outside of their immediate circle of friends and family.
But Yugi's already dashing about, getting their things together, and when that's done, he's practically jumping down the stairs with Atem right behind.
He listens to the exchange between Yugi and his grandfather, already having noticed there's someone else in the room, someone more than a little familiar. How interesting that she should be here now, sitting at the table with Solomon.
He returns Yugi's glance, but he's just as surprised as he is. ]
I wasn't expecting anyone to be joining us. [ Let alone someone that he met on the street last night and wound up in a tea shop, having a drink together.
He's curious as to why she's here, but he imagines both of them will learn the answer that sooner rather than later. ]
no subject
[ They won't have a ton of time to get enough locator cards to get into the final rounds. Even if that means he needs to lose a few hours of sleep. The Ghouls - Rare Hunters - seem even more insane than the Player Killers that Pegasus sent around the island.
Even with that in mind, Yugi sees it as this tournament is important for other reasons. The memories of his other self are on the line. That's a priority for him. The quicker they can get what they need to secure the final round entry the better. Then they can have time while they wait for the other semi-finalists. No doubt Kaiba is going to be there and wanting to continue the ongoing feud from before Duelist Kingdom...
Of course, that all slams to a screeching halt in his mind the moment he takes in the scene in front of him. He looks at his Grandpa, to their guest, then to Atem, and back again. It isn't too often anymore that he feels like he is missing something. He does now though.
'I wasn't either... Grandpa didn't mention having company for the last few days.'
Best to keep the communication between him and Atem quiet and in their minds. Given no one else in the room knows about the Pharaoh's spirit -- at least that is what Yugi thinks. Their guest looks from Solomon back to Yugi, with her eyes going straight to the Puzzle around his neck. Yugi instinctively grabs it and pulls it closer. He doesn't think she'd do anything, but, the recent months have taught him not to be too trusting with things. ]
I ddn't know you were going to have a guest during everything, Grandpa...
'Neither did I! Her family always enjoyed surprising me out of nowhere.'
[ So, long term friends then? He frowns and tries to wrap his mind around who might be an old enough friend with a family member around his age. Not that that he has long before the woman is turning towards him and Atem again. The look of surprise has gone away into a quiet pondering. ]
Then, that's what you found in Egypt? [ She is addressing Solomon despite smiling at Yugi. ]
'Technically, I found it before I met your grandfather! I had it before he even found me in that bar in Cairo, I'll have you know. Not that he could beat me in a game for it...'
[ The younger woman shakes her head at the boast from the older man. She nods to the ancient artifact around Yugi's neck. ]
Did you put it together?
Yeah--uh, eventually. It took me eight years. You know about the Millennium Puzzle? [ Yugi spares another glance over at Atem. ] Grandpa never mentioned how he found it...
[ The younger woman turns her head to look back at Solomon. He crosses his arms again and gives a heavy sigh. There's suddenly a heavy air in the room suddenly. He takes a subconscious step closer to his other self at it. It's not foreboding, but it's certainly not something he really is comfortable with. Especially as it seems the other two are having a silent conversation he's not necessarily following.
She stands elegantly then and Yugi feels himself freezing in place. There is a certain confidence around her then. ]
Then, there is no point in caring on as if you are unaware of things. [ Yugi notes she has an accent then. She's not from Japan? His eyebrows raise as she bows once again. ] My name is Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. My grandparents sponsored many of your grandfather's trips to Egypt.
[ 'Many-- he went more than once?!' ]
no subject
Of course, if Yugi wants to keep their conversations to just them, he understands. The caution is warranted, even if the woman at the table is a friend of Solomon's. But no one aside from Yugi can hear him anyway, so he adds: ]
I suppose now isn't a good time to mention that I've seen her before.
[ He has to stop briefly then, because the conversation between Yugi, his grandfather, and Lunafreya continues. Although it doesn't involve him directly, aside from the mentions of the Puzzle, he can't help but listen closely, hoping to learn more about Lunafreya and about how Solomon first found the object.
When Yugi steps closer to him, however, he glances away from Solomon and Lunafreya, giving his friend a reassuring smile. Whatever is happening in this room, and whoever Lunafreya really is, he imagines that Solomon is smart enough to handle his own affairs and this situation.
And when Lunafreya finally names the connection between herself, her family, and Solomon, Atem looks as surprised as Yugi sounds. ]
What was it about Egypt that interested him so much? [ He hopes that question will eventually be answered by one of the two in the room, if not both. For the moment, at least for him, he's temporarily forgotten about needing to go to where the duels are being held. This conversation is riveting, even though he's only indirectly a part of it. ]
no subject
'Yugi, sit down.'
[ He does and glances over to make sure his best friend is going to be next to him.
Solomon sighs and Lunafreya folds her hands in front of her. She remains standing, and Yugi notes the golden armlets she has. Then, she nods to Solomon to continue. The older Mutou looks at his grandson squarely. ]
'I had heard the one who solved the Millennium Puzzle would inherit something great. Endless challenges, but, even I didn't believe in that at first.' [ Solomon sighs and looks up at the ceiling. ] 'In my younger years, I traveled the world in search of games. Gambling, high stakes, anything. I heard of something called the Shadow Games in Egypt and went in search of it. Passing those was how I found the Millennium Puzzle. It wasn't two days later that Luna's grandfather approached me about it. He challenged me to a game of cards that I of course won. Surprising to me, he respected me as the winner, but informed me of what those Shadow Games really were -- and the creatures I witnessed in that place.'
[ Solomon looks back to Yugi. ] 'He also told me that according to the box the Puzzle was in would inherit a great power. The soul of the Pharaoh inside it. Not that I believed him for a second...'
[ Yugi nearly bolts up right at that. 'He knew all along?! Grandpa knew you were here, Other Me--did you know?!'
His gaze turns sharply to the guest at the table, ready to question if she knew as well. Then he notices the subtle surprise on Lunafreya's face as well. A surprise that seems to turn into a sense of thoughtfulness. Yugi slams his hands on the table, about to say something, when Lunafreya turns to him and Atem. He meets her gaze without hesitation... but realizes it's more like she's studying him than anything. ]
My grandfather was worried that Mutou-sama had unleashed something very powerful in his reckless--[ Solomon rather loudly insists he wasn't reckless or disrespectful, ]--attempts at Shadow Games. He dedicated his life to unearthing and preserving history long forgotten. He hosted several trips people made to Egypt and the rest of the ancient world in an attempt to find such things. It was his way of standing beside my grandmother in her calling.
[ He just woke up and he already feels exhausted. It's tempting to let Atem take over while he stands by and listens. Why not? His Grandpa already knows... and Lunafreya seems to understand it. Yugi puts his arms on the table and his head on his arms.
'It never stops, Other Me.' It's frustrating and a whirlwind of never ending information. How deep does this world the Millennium Items inhabit go? 'It's one thing after another...'
Solomon sighs and shakes his head at the display with a frown of worry on his face. Lunafreya raises her hand but stops short of placing it on Yugi's shoulder. After all, she is a stranger, and he may not want comfort from someone he has only just met. ]
no subject
No, Yugi, I didn't know. [ Atem shakes his head, surprise plain on his face, as he looks first at Solomon, and then at Lunafreya. ] I had no way of knowing that he was aware I was present.
[ He falls silent again when Luna begins to speak. Her words are also interesting, but he's still working on processing the idea that Solomon knew about him from the start. ]
I'm sorry, Yugi. I didn't know that all of this was going to unfold today. [ He turns slightly, watching as Lunafreya moves to place her hand on Yugi's shoulder. But then she pauses as if to hesitate, and he decides to complete the move, but on the opposite side. He supposes it won't be much of a comfort to Yugi, but at least the revelation from Solomon and Lunafreya isn't nearly as dire as some of the other things they've learned recently.
Still, he wants to reassure his friend as much as he can, so he gives his shoulder a light squeeze. ]
no subject
'There was no way for you to know.' Yugi shakes his head, clearly not blaming his best friend at all. His shoulders slump slightly at the reassuring touch, but Atem should be able to tell that Yugi is far from displeased about the reassuring notion. He welcomes it. 'Grandpa has known since the start, and he never said anything. That means he knew when we went to Duelist Kingdom and fought Pegasus... he knows all about the Millennium Items too. He kept quiet this whole time!'
Part of him is angry about it. Why keep it a secret? Why do any of this the way it has been. Part of him wants to scream out of sheer frustration. Why did he have to say anything now? Why not before Battle City -- or even after it?!
A few moments pass before he slowly raises his head and drags his hands through his blonde bangs. Right. His Grandpa's sudden reveal aside, that just leaves the other question in the room he supposes. He turns his head to look up at the woman standing on his otherside. Lunafreya--? That's difficult to say, let alone pronounce in his head. ]
Did your grandfather know about the Pharaoh?
[ Lunafreya shakes her head. ] No, he was far more worried about the connection of ancient items to the Shadow Games.
...What do you know about the Shadow Games?
[ There is a sigh that escapes Lunafreya then. She glances to Solomon who simply shrugs and closes his eyes.
Yugi glances back at Atem, eyebrows turned upwards in confusion. 'You said you met her. Does she know--'
There's a sudden flash of light that he catches from the corner of his eyes. Yugi turns his head quickly, nearly falling out of the chair from the sheer momentum of it all. Lunafreya stands there in her modern clothing with a very ancient appearing Trident. A serious expression takes her face then, but, Yugi doesn't feel as if she's condescending about it at all. ]
My family has spent generations speaking to the creatures you now refer to as Duel Monsters. [ Lunafreya explains it gently, moving to hold the Trident in both hands across her body. ] We were chosen to speak to them on behalf of humanity, but also to humanity on behalf of them. Shadow Games became a way to weaponize them into combat. Duel Monsters is merely the modern adaptation of an ancient tradition.

Now isn't the first time that his lack of knowledge has bothered him, but it seems to him that every time they uncover something else that he should know, that feeling of inadequacy resurfaces and grows a bit stronger with every turn. ] I should be able to remember these things, Yugi, but I know I don't have to tell you that I just can't.
[ Of course he doesn't begrudge Solomon knowing what he does, but why does it seem as though nearly everyone else in his life, aside from maybe himself and Yugi and their friends, knows more about important topics such as the true origin and meaning of the Shadow Games?
He slowly removes his hand from where he'd placed it on Yugi's shoulder, and he crosses his arms in front of him as he tries to process the things that are unfolding before them. ]
I may have mentioned the Games to her in passing, but I didn't know that she had a connection to them through her family If I had, I would have told you, of course. [ He tries to never have there be secrets between them, unless it's something that he can't remember or couldn't have known. But so far as he can help it, he makes a point of trying to always be honest with his friend and partner. ]
We knew that about Duel Monsters and how it is more of a modern incarnation of how the Games were played in the past.
[ He hopes that isn't all Lunafreya chooses to relay. She seems as though she must know something, but it can't just be that. ]

If things weren't the way they were... Yugi might think it a good sign that they keep meeting people who know what they are lacking knowledge in. But, at the moment, it's so frustrating. Though, the fact he had even mentioned the games in passing to someone makes his eyebrows raise.
'When did you meet her?'
He looks back at Lunafreya then, namely the Trident in her hold. ]
That's not a Millennium Item, is it?
[ Lunafreya shakes her head. ] No. This is the Trident of the Oracle. It has been passed down from woman to woman in my family line for thousands of years. Unlike your item, Mutou-sama, it hails from Greece.
'...The Oracle?' [ Yugi has heard the term but he really doesn't know what it means. ] 'Oh, and, just Yugi is fine. You don't need to be so formal.'

It was the night before the Battle City finals began. I grew restless, so I-
[ He hesitates here, still feeling as though maybe he went too far in taking Yugi's form and going for a walk. Obscuring the truth is unthinkable, of course, so he just presses on. ]
I took a walk, and while I was doing so, I met her on the street. We ended up going to a tea shop and talking for a little while.
[ He falls silent again as Lunafreya begins explaining what her Trident is and its significance and origins. It might not be a Millennium Item, but it seems to be both very old and very powerful. ]
no subject
He's more confused at the timing than the fact Atem needed a walk. In fact, he doesn't seem bothered at all that his other self would need time in control. As long as he wakes up in nearly the same place... well, he won't have an issue. ]
Yes. The Oracle is a tradition that hails from Ancient Greece, just as your Millennium Items hail from Ancient Egypt. They believed that speaking with what you refer to as Duel Monsters and creating a balanced harmony yielded better results than placing the spirits into stone slabs and making battle with them. The Oracle of Delphi was consulted on state and religious affairs, while the minor Oracle was consulted when it came to balancing the worlds.
My grandmother was the Oracle. My grandfather was inspired to restore what he could of the old world as the monarchies had collapsed at the turn of the century. He wished to preserve the history that the modern world turned a blind eye to. That drive along side my grandmother drove him to learn of the Shadow Games of Ancient Egypt, which led him to meet your grandfather. I very much doubt he knew much of the Millennium Items before hand.
[ Yugi looks down as he thinks it over. He mulls the information over, but glances up when his grandpa laughs. ]
He was always bad at blackjack. Not that he would have won in chess against me!

Pretend that I'm not a dodo who forgets details.Atem nods, but he also looks slightly abashed. Perhaps his timing wasn't the best, but he found himself feeling far too restless for his own liking. ]Yes, last night. I shouldn't have gone, but as I said, I grew restless and needed a moment.
[ Except a moment turned into several. He falls silent again, because Lunafreya's explanation is riveting, because he hadn't known all of the nuances that came with the role of Oracle. Neither had he known of the extent of Lunafreya's family's history, so that too is also of great interest to him.
There's also the connection between Lunafreya's family and Yugi's. Perhaps things are much more interconnected than he'd ever realized. ]

Awh but you're my rp dodo friendo ♥Yugi shakes his head slightly at Atem. 'It's fine, Other Me. I don't mind'
Then, he looks at his Grandpa with a bit of a smirk. ] Maybe you should play a game against the Other Me sometime, Grandpa. See if you can still say you're great at games.
Oh, I'm past my prime, I don't need to be reminded of it...
[ Yugi smiles a bit. 'It just sounds like he's trying to get out of being beaten.'
Yugi does have one question on his mind. He tilts his head back to look at Lunafreya again. She stands there with her Trident across her still, hands holding it in a gentle fashion. So, the Oracle keeps the peace between worlds? The monsters in the Shadow Games are real... and that means they're the ones that she can talk to?
'I know your memories are lost, Other Me, but does anything about the Oracle sound familiar?' ]
So, what can you... do? How do you talk to them?
[ Lunafreya shares another glance towards Solomon who nods in approval. She looks back at the two, unaware if the Pharaoh is with them or not. In fact, she is just now settling on the understanding that the man she spoke with the night before and the one in front of her are different. It's in their eyes, and how they speak. ]
May I see your deck? If Ousama agrees.
no subject
♥ sorry you have to put up with me and my spacinessAtem just nods in response. ] All right, if you're sure. [ Still, he doesn't plan on turning that into a habit.
But then Yugi makes that suggestion, and in spite of himself, Atem smiles and laughs. ] Playing against your grandfather would be quite the challenge, I'm sure. And I'm quite certain that he's still able to duel and make it a difficult one at that.
[ He would never force Solomon to duel him, but he can't pretend that to do so wouldn't be a great honor. Yugi addresses him again, and his expression sobers just a fraction. ]
I wish that it did, but nothing that she's explained so far seems familiar to me. [ It shouldn't be a surprise at this point, but even he hope that something Lunafreya said would stir up a memory, or at least a spark of recognition. ]
She wants to see our deck? [ He's not surprised, exactly; in fact, he's curious, and because of that, he nods. ] Of course I agree. As long as you're all right with it as well.

and you have to put up with my ridiculousness ;~;Yugi is still fairly certain that his grandfather is trying to getting out of dueling the Pharaoh. Either out of respect or simply because he wanted his pride in tact. Yugi isn't sure which one it really is.
Lunafreya turns her head to look at Solomon, asking silent permission one final time. The older man opens an eye and glances between herself and Yugi before nodding. She bows deeply as a sign of gratitude before turning to face Yugi and Atem. Yugi nods to Atem before reaching into the deck holster and pulling it out, holding it out to Lunafreya.
She takes the deck gently with great care, as if it is a precious relic. The Trident rests against her shoulder as her other hand covers the deck and she closes her eyes. A smile touches her face. ]
There is a great respect and admiration for the both of you from these spirits. Almost a sense of honor in being chosen to battle along side you.
[ Her head tilts then and an eye opens. There is one particular monster that speaks out the most amid the many voices. An ancient voice... making her wonder on how deep the connections go. She fans the cards out between her fingers. One card is pushed forward by her thumb and she draws it with her other hand.
It is rather obvious she has never played the game.
Lunafreya looks the card over. The Dark Magician. It is a rather simply designed card, and would certainly be just a card if wielded by someone else. She collapses the deck again in her hand before closing her eye once again. There is a slight charge in the air; a breeze that seems to be pulling in one direction. In a blink of an eye the Dark Magician comes into form being Lunafreya.
Yugi leaps out of his chair in surprise, sending it backwards. The Dark Magician nods in respect to the wielder of the Millennium Puzzle. Then, his eyes move straight to meet Atem's. He bows deeply then.
Pharaoh.
Lunafreya half-turns to look at the monster with a look of understanding crossing her face. ]
D-Dark Magician?! But it's--
You are correct, Yugi-sama. He is not a hologram.

we can just be ridiculous and spacey together, it's fineAtem would never dream of forcing Solomon into anything he isn't comfortable with, but the fact remains that dueling him would be an honor.
For now, though, he just watches as Yugi gives their deck to Lunafreya, curious about what might happen when the Oracle meets the deck that they've put together.
But then she pulls out the Dark Magician, and he leans in a bit, both because he feels drawn to that monster in particular and because he wants to see what will happen next.
What does occur next is clearly something neither he nor Yugi were expecting. Dark Magician materializes right in front of them, and before Atem even knows what's happening, he's bowing to him. Confusion shows itself plainly on Atem's face as he watches this unfold. ]
I don't understand how this is happening. [ Well, he understands enough to know that somehow, Lunafreya's status as Oracle is making something happen to bring Dark Magician forward, but he doesn't understand this any more clearly than Yugi does. ]
no subject
'Much remains shrouded... memories will come in time.'
Lunafreya nods, despite she does not quite understand all of what he implies. Still, she turns back to the pair that almost can't believe their eyes. She smiles then. ]
To answer your question... The Oracle speaks to them as we would to one another. Thoughts, emotions, body language. They are all present within them. Duel Monsters are beings - as you and I are - and have existed with our world for thousands of years.
The Ancient Egyptians would use their energy to summon them and seal them away in stone tablets. The methods my ancestors developed was to attempt to make relations and exist along side them. [ She glances back at the Magician who nods, giving his permission. ] You called him the Dark Magician - yes? His is an ancient soul, very proud and full of knowledge. He has a fondness for both of you, but an undying loyalty to you, Ousama. It seems to be an ancient bond.
[ Yugi turns to look at Atem then. 'An ancient bond? Do you think that you knew him back in Ancient Eygpt? It must be why he is always in our deck. You know him. ]

He listens thoughtfully as Lunafreya goes on to explain how she communicates with the monsters from the card game. To her, it seems as though they're much more than just monsters or cards, and that's a notion that he can agree with.
Then he turns to glance at Yugi, confusion still clear on his face, but now he just has more questions than before. ]
I suppose that I might have. I've always felt as though there was something drawing me to him, but I just thought that was because he was the card I played most often during duels. [ Or rather, most often when he found himself in a tight spot. ]
I wish that I could remember him as he truly is, not just as a card inside our deck.
[ Of course he can see him standing there in front of them, but that on its own does nothing to restore his sealed away memories.
Evidently, the Magician can see him just as easily as he can see Yugi, so Atem turns to face him next. ] I'm sorry that I can't remember you or why you were important to me.
no subject
She can't read minds, can she?
The Dark Magician shakes his head at the Pharaoh's apology. A hand raises as if to dismiss it. 'The knowledge will come in time. Things have been set in motion.'
Lunafreya turns her attention back to the Magician before looking at where he is. Of course, she cannot see the Pharaoh, but presumes that is who the Magician addresses. It seems like she and Yugi will play a similar role in this. ]
He says there is no need for apologies, heika. He is certain the knowledge will come in time.
[ Yugi glances at the Magician again. ] He can hear Other Me too?
He can indeed. The two will need to learn how to communicate with one another--and you too will learn as well.
no subject
Knowing that Lunafreya can't see him, he turns to look her direction anyway. This must feel odd to her, speaking to someone that she can't even see, but he supposes she's seen odder things before. ]
If only I had half of his certainty. Neither Yugi or I know where to begin, except that we must participate in this tournament. [ And even then, that isn't really much of a signpost directing them where to go or what to do. ]
We can't even know that this is truly what we're meant to be doing. [ Oh, they've had some experiences that pointed them to this tournament, and of course, part of him still believes that it may be their destiny to do this, but it's difficult knowing that they won't know how everything fits until it happens. In that sense, Atem really does like to have everything laid out in front of him and arranged, thus eliminating some of the guessing.
This feels more like dominoes falling, and none of them know which way the pieces will fall. ]
It seems that at every turn, something else unexpected turns up. [ But even as he says that, he offers the Magician a fond sort of smile. He's in his deck for a reason, and there's no shaking the fond sort of familiarity he has for the magic user. If it's possible for them to learn how to communicate, then he'll put every effort into making that happen. ]

She moves her hand from Yugi's head to his shoulder in silent support.
Yugi sighs. ] There's always something we don't expect that shows up. It's just difficult to know where to go or what to do.
Destiny has a way to weave its threads in ways we cannot see or understand. A general sense of goal or calling may be thrust upon us, but, that does not mean we know every step to take. It is up to us to find a way to meet our destiny.
[ Yugi raises his eyebrows. ] You have one too?
[ Lunafreya turns back to the Magician. He nods, finally landing on his feet to stand evenly with all of them. His gaze briefly moves to the silent grandfather who listens carefully in on the whole conversation. ]
To bring a spirit such as your Dark Magician into this realm takes either training to channel energy, or, something akin to a Shadow Game. Some can even bring them into our world without them being aware that they have. It is my place to ease such things and guide them to where they belong. There is no documentation that taught me how to. I trained and learned without guidance, but, still received the help from my best friend.
[ The Magician turns his gaze back to Lunafreya at the statement. An unvoiced question receives a silent nod to answer. ]
no subject
And neither can he see how what Lunafreya says applies to their current situation, but whether he can see it or not, the least he can do is listen to her words with respect. Everything has its meaning and importance, and he's certain there's a purpose behind all of this as well. ]
It seems as though you hold quite an important role, then, perhaps an even greater one than ours. [ He nods to Yugi then; they both have an important role to play, but somehow, Lunafreya's seems much more significant. He's always thought as much, just based on what she's told him so far; her words now only confirm that for him. She seems to be a bridge for the spirits, a guidepost for them, and that only makes his respect for her increase. ]
no subject
[ To that, Lunafreya shakes her head slightly. ] No. My role is in majority a passive one. I believe that what you two might accomplish here will shape the world to come. It may not be the foundation of a country or a government, but, sometimes the largest changes go unnoticed by the majority of the world. Simply look at how much has changed because of one card game. Look at what the two of you have accomplished because of that game. The two of you have a path carved ahead of you that will find a way to call you back time and time again.
And, for every trail that you will face, [ she half turns again to the Dark Magician and bows deeply to him. He in return bows his head. ] Your Magician will be at your side. All you need do is call upon him and he will aid you in any situation he can.
no subject
As for the Dark Magician and the assistance he offers, Atem is grateful for it as always. He's a mainstay of his deck, but he's much more than that, as Atem is beginning to realize. ]
I have a feeling that we may need both of you before the end. [ The end of what? This tournament? Perhaps... But there always seems to be some great challenge that rises up even as one is concluding.
Atem might not be able to see the future or know what is coming next, but he just has a feeling that both Lunafreya and the Dark Magician will have important roles to play as events unfold.
.... Or perhaps it's only wishful thinking talking. ]
no subject
The Magician nods firmly in resolve. Lunafreya, of course, is unable to hear what Atem has said. All she can do is guess by the reactions of the spirit beside her and the teenager who stands almost star struck by the display around him. ]
Well, we might need the help of both of you through this tournament. [ Yugi paraphrases what Atem has said. ] There is someone after the Egyptian God Cards, but... there's a more personal reason that we entered Battle City.
[ Lunafreya looks to the Magician once again. His expression falls ever so slightly, but his gaze says that he has far more knowledge of the situation. Her head tilts in a question she knows that he will not answer. A glance to the side is given before her attention returns back to Yugi. ]
Should you and Ousama ever need my help, then please, call upon me.
