INSOMNIA

( cont from here )

[ Lunafreya nods in confirmation. Her family had not always been nobility, but had in fact been regarded highly. At some point they had married into nobility and their path had been set from there. Although, she is not sure that her bloodline would have continued on if they hadn't married into royalty. Turmoil had always set in, and seemed to only escalate once they had moved past the ancient times. ]

Yes. Though, I doubt you would find any news of them in the wide scale public news these days. [ Not since her mother's death. Her brother's marriage did little to garner attention, but, perhaps that was for the best. ] The status of noble hardly matters in today's modern era.

[ The minds of his friends being trapped? Her gaze wanders to the side as she ponders. That is certainly beyond what she is capable of healing. Her skill set was far removed from this conversation and she aimed to keep it that way. Atem had enough to weigh down on his shoulders. The last he needed was the awareness of her true title and full scope of her duty. He most certainly had a plan in mind to reverse the state his friends were in regardless. ]

Seto Kaiba is the one who has created the level of augmentation, has he not? [ Her expressions settles into something of a serious nature. She may not know the rules of this card game, or how to play it, but she certainly knows the names attached to it. It was brought to her attention after the tournaments grew far too popular. ] The game is far too dangerous to be treated the way it is -- regardless if technology had not been introduced. It would have been better if Maximilian Pegasus had never created it.

[ The drop of formality around the creator of the game certainly does not imply familiarity. Quite the opposite. Lunafeya believes the man to be a naive visionary who refused to see how ignorant he had become. The details of the Egyptian Gods are not ones she knows, but, she would be far from surprised to learn of such things. Enough of the creatures in the game are depictions of real ones.

She glances over the menu before giving him a gentle smile. ]

[ When Yugi suddenly awakens, Atem startles, moving from a sitting position at Yugi's desk to a standing one. ]

I thought that you needed your sleep, and if it's the tournament you're worried about, well- [ He merely shrugs. ] There's time enough for us to make it there and to get what we need to continue our participation.

[ As he's previously mentioned, even if Yugi isn't aware of it, he doesn't really require sleep, but the fact remains that Yugi does, and if they're going to win this tournament, he needs to be in peak condition. And that includes having had enough rest. To anyone else, allowing Yugi to sleep in might have appeared irresponsible, but Atem didn't particularly care about how he looked to anyone outside of their immediate circle of friends and family.

But Yugi's already dashing about, getting their things together, and when that's done, he's practically jumping down the stairs with Atem right behind.

He listens to the exchange between Yugi and his grandfather, already having noticed there's someone else in the room, someone more than a little familiar. How interesting that she should be here now, sitting at the table with Solomon.

He returns Yugi's glance, but he's just as surprised as he is. ]

I wasn't expecting anyone to be joining us. [ Let alone someone that he met on the street last night and wound up in a tea shop, having a drink together.

He's curious as to why she's here, but he imagines both of them will learn the answer that sooner rather than later. ]

There's not that much time! [ He says it over his shoulder, shouting down the stairs. ] If it's anything like Duelist Kingdom...

[ They won't have a ton of time to get enough locator cards to get into the final rounds. Even if that means he needs to lose a few hours of sleep. The Ghouls - Rare Hunters - seem even more insane than the Player Killers that Pegasus sent around the island.

Even with that in mind, Yugi sees it as this tournament is important for other reasons. The memories of his other self are on the line. That's a priority for him. The quicker they can get what they need to secure the final round entry the better. Then they can have time while they wait for the other semi-finalists. No doubt Kaiba is going to be there and wanting to continue the ongoing feud from before Duelist Kingdom...

Of course, that all slams to a screeching halt in his mind the moment he takes in the scene in front of him. He looks at his Grandpa, to their guest, then to Atem, and back again. It isn't too often anymore that he feels like he is missing something. He does now though.

'I wasn't either... Grandpa didn't mention having company for the last few days.'

Best to keep the communication between him and Atem quiet and in their minds. Given no one else in the room knows about the Pharaoh's spirit -- at least that is what Yugi thinks. Their guest looks from Solomon back to Yugi, with her eyes going straight to the Puzzle around his neck. Yugi instinctively grabs it and pulls it closer. He doesn't think she'd do anything, but, the recent months have taught him not to be too trusting with things. ]

I ddn't know you were going to have a guest during everything, Grandpa...

'Neither did I! Her family always enjoyed surprising me out of nowhere.'

[ So, long term friends then? He frowns and tries to wrap his mind around who might be an old enough friend with a family member around his age. Not that that he has long before the woman is turning towards him and Atem again. The look of surprise has gone away into a quiet pondering. ]

Then, that's what you found in Egypt? [ She is addressing Solomon despite smiling at Yugi. ]

'Technically, I found it before I met your grandfather! I had it before he even found me in that bar in Cairo, I'll have you know. Not that he could beat me in a game for it...'

[ The younger woman shakes her head at the boast from the older man. She nods to the ancient artifact around Yugi's neck. ]

Did you put it together?

Yeah--uh, eventually. It took me eight years. You know about the Millennium Puzzle? [ Yugi spares another glance over at Atem. ] Grandpa never mentioned how he found it...

[ The younger woman turns her head to look back at Solomon. He crosses his arms again and gives a heavy sigh. There's suddenly a heavy air in the room suddenly. He takes a subconscious step closer to his other self at it. It's not foreboding, but it's certainly not something he really is comfortable with. Especially as it seems the other two are having a silent conversation he's not necessarily following.

She stands elegantly then and Yugi feels himself freezing in place. There is a certain confidence around her then. ]

Then, there is no point in caring on as if you are unaware of things. [ Yugi notes she has an accent then. She's not from Japan? His eyebrows raise as she bows once again. ] My name is Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. My grandparents sponsored many of your grandfather's trips to Egypt.

[ 'Many-- he went more than once?!' ]

Yugi, it's all right. We still have time. [ Of course he understands why Yugi's worried, when there's so much on the line for both of them, but they won't accomplish anything by rushing in blindly. By playing their cards right (literally), and acting decisively, they'll get the locator cards that they need, and then they'll be on their way to the final round.

Of course, if Yugi wants to keep their conversations to just them, he understands. The caution is warranted, even if the woman at the table is a friend of Solomon's. But no one aside from Yugi can hear him anyway, so he adds: ]

I suppose now isn't a good time to mention that I've seen her before.

[ He has to stop briefly then, because the conversation between Yugi, his grandfather, and Lunafreya continues. Although it doesn't involve him directly, aside from the mentions of the Puzzle, he can't help but listen closely, hoping to learn more about Lunafreya and about how Solomon first found the object.

When Yugi steps closer to him, however, he glances away from Solomon and Lunafreya, giving his friend a reassuring smile. Whatever is happening in this room, and whoever Lunafreya really is, he imagines that Solomon is smart enough to handle his own affairs and this situation.

And when Lunafreya finally names the connection between herself, her family, and Solomon, Atem looks as surprised as Yugi sounds. ]

What was it about Egypt that interested him so much? [ He hopes that question will eventually be answered by one of the two in the room, if not both. For the moment, at least for him, he's temporarily forgotten about needing to go to where the duels are being held. This conversation is riveting, even though he's only indirectly a part of it. ]

[ Yugi whirls his head to look at Atem once that has sunk in. He's seen her before?! When?! He opens his mouth to respond - temporarily forgetting that no one else in the room can see Atem - but stops the moment he hears his Grandpa clear his throat. Yugi looks back at the two at the table, one with a stern face and the other giving him a gentle smile. That heaviness remains even as he shifts from one foot to the other. ]

'Yugi, sit down.'

[ He does and glances over to make sure his best friend is going to be next to him.

Solomon sighs and Lunafreya folds her hands in front of her. She remains standing, and Yugi notes the golden armlets she has. Then, she nods to Solomon to continue. The older Mutou looks at his grandson squarely. ]

'I had heard the one who solved the Millennium Puzzle would inherit something great. Endless challenges, but, even I didn't believe in that at first.' [ Solomon sighs and looks up at the ceiling. ] 'In my younger years, I traveled the world in search of games. Gambling, high stakes, anything. I heard of something called the Shadow Games in Egypt and went in search of it. Passing those was how I found the Millennium Puzzle. It wasn't two days later that Luna's grandfather approached me about it. He challenged me to a game of cards that I of course won. Surprising to me, he respected me as the winner, but informed me of what those Shadow Games really were -- and the creatures I witnessed in that place.'

[ Solomon looks back to Yugi. ] 'He also told me that according to the box the Puzzle was in would inherit a great power. The soul of the Pharaoh inside it. Not that I believed him for a second...'

[ Yugi nearly bolts up right at that. 'He knew all along?! Grandpa knew you were here, Other Me--did you know?!'

His gaze turns sharply to the guest at the table, ready to question if she knew as well. Then he notices the subtle surprise on Lunafreya's face as well. A surprise that seems to turn into a sense of thoughtfulness. Yugi slams his hands on the table, about to say something, when Lunafreya turns to him and Atem. He meets her gaze without hesitation... but realizes it's more like she's studying him than anything. ]

My grandfather was worried that Mutou-sama had unleashed something very powerful in his reckless--[ Solomon rather loudly insists he wasn't reckless or disrespectful, ]--attempts at Shadow Games. He dedicated his life to unearthing and preserving history long forgotten. He hosted several trips people made to Egypt and the rest of the ancient world in an attempt to find such things. It was his way of standing beside my grandmother in her calling.

[ He just woke up and he already feels exhausted. It's tempting to let Atem take over while he stands by and listens. Why not? His Grandpa already knows... and Lunafreya seems to understand it. Yugi puts his arms on the table and his head on his arms.

'It never stops, Other Me.' It's frustrating and a whirlwind of never ending information. How deep does this world the Millennium Items inhabit go? 'It's one thing after another...'

Solomon sighs and shakes his head at the display with a frown of worry on his face. Lunafreya raises her hand but stops short of placing it on Yugi's shoulder. After all, she is a stranger, and he may not want comfort from someone he has only just met. ]

[ For a minute or two, Atem says nothing, moving to stand close to Yugi as he listens to Solomon relate his story. The revelation about the Puzzle isn't a surprise, as that's already a known fact, but what is a surprise is the fact that Solomon knew of his existence all this time, while both himself and Yugi were under the impression that he was completely unaware. ]

No, Yugi, I didn't know. [ Atem shakes his head, surprise plain on his face, as he looks first at Solomon, and then at Lunafreya. ] I had no way of knowing that he was aware I was present.

[ He falls silent again when Luna begins to speak. Her words are also interesting, but he's still working on processing the idea that Solomon knew about him from the start. ]

I'm sorry, Yugi. I didn't know that all of this was going to unfold today. [ He turns slightly, watching as Lunafreya moves to place her hand on Yugi's shoulder. But then she pauses as if to hesitate, and he decides to complete the move, but on the opposite side. He supposes it won't be much of a comfort to Yugi, but at least the revelation from Solomon and Lunafreya isn't nearly as dire as some of the other things they've learned recently.

Still, he wants to reassure his friend as much as he can, so he gives his shoulder a light squeeze. ]

[ Solomon leaves out some rather telling details as well. Namely the fact he was betrayed by those who hired him, nearly died, and was only saved by the spirit of the Pharaoh. Which is why he watches his grandson ever so closely. Yugi still remains the only one that can see the displaced spirit, but, Solomon has learned to tell when it is his grandson or not present.

'There was no way for you to know.' Yugi shakes his head, clearly not blaming his best friend at all. His shoulders slump slightly at the reassuring touch, but Atem should be able to tell that Yugi is far from displeased about the reassuring notion. He welcomes it. 'Grandpa has known since the start, and he never said anything. That means he knew when we went to Duelist Kingdom and fought Pegasus... he knows all about the Millennium Items too. He kept quiet this whole time!'

Part of him is angry about it. Why keep it a secret? Why do any of this the way it has been. Part of him wants to scream out of sheer frustration. Why did he have to say anything now? Why not before Battle City -- or even after it?!

A few moments pass before he slowly raises his head and drags his hands through his blonde bangs. Right. His Grandpa's sudden reveal aside, that just leaves the other question in the room he supposes. He turns his head to look up at the woman standing on his otherside. Lunafreya--? That's difficult to say, let alone pronounce in his head. ]

Did your grandfather know about the Pharaoh?

[ Lunafreya shakes her head. ] No, he was far more worried about the connection of ancient items to the Shadow Games.

...What do you know about the Shadow Games?

[ There is a sigh that escapes Lunafreya then. She glances to Solomon who simply shrugs and closes his eyes.

Yugi glances back at Atem, eyebrows turned upwards in confusion. 'You said you met her. Does she know--'

There's a sudden flash of light that he catches from the corner of his eyes. Yugi turns his head quickly, nearly falling out of the chair from the sheer momentum of it all. Lunafreya stands there in her modern clothing with a very ancient appearing Trident. A serious expression takes her face then, but, Yugi doesn't feel as if she's condescending about it at all. ]

My family has spent generations speaking to the creatures you now refer to as Duel Monsters. [ Lunafreya explains it gently, moving to hold the Trident in both hands across her body. ] We were chosen to speak to them on behalf of humanity, but also to humanity on behalf of them. Shadow Games became a way to weaponize them into combat. Duel Monsters is merely the modern adaptation of an ancient tradition.

It seems as though there's quite a lot that I don't know. [ Including the things that Solomon didn't divulge. Not having his memories is one thing; learning that there's more information that he should know and remember but doesn't is hardly reassuring to him.

Now isn't the first time that his lack of knowledge has bothered him, but it seems to him that every time they uncover something else that he should know, that feeling of inadequacy resurfaces and grows a bit stronger with every turn. ]
I should be able to remember these things, Yugi, but I know I don't have to tell you that I just can't.

[ Of course he doesn't begrudge Solomon knowing what he does, but why does it seem as though nearly everyone else in his life, aside from maybe himself and Yugi and their friends, knows more about important topics such as the true origin and meaning of the Shadow Games?

He slowly removes his hand from where he'd placed it on Yugi's shoulder, and he crosses his arms in front of him as he tries to process the things that are unfolding before them. ]

I may have mentioned the Games to her in passing, but I didn't know that she had a connection to them through her family If I had, I would have told you, of course. [ He tries to never have there be secrets between them, unless it's something that he can't remember or couldn't have known. But so far as he can help it, he makes a point of trying to always be honest with his friend and partner. ]

We knew that about Duel Monsters and how it is more of a modern incarnation of how the Games were played in the past.

[ He hopes that isn't all Lunafreya chooses to relay. She seems as though she must know something, but it can't just be that. ]

[ Atem gives Yugi a look in return, as if he can tell what thoughts are running through his mind. He shakes his head, and then he reaches for him, intending to take his hand and give it a firm, reassuring squeeze. If Yugi had never put the Puzzle together, then he'd still be sealed inside it, wandering through a never-ending maze of halls, doors, and staircases, with nothing but silence and his own thoughts for company. Yes, sealing himself inside was his choice, but it certainly isn't very much of an existence. ]

It was the night before the Battle City finals began. I grew restless, so I-

I took a walk, and while I was doing so, I met her on the street. We ended up going to a tea shop and talking for a little while.

Yes, last night. I shouldn't have gone, but as I said, I grew restless and needed a moment.

[ Except a moment turned into several. He falls silent again, because Lunafreya's explanation is riveting, because he hadn't known all of the nuances that came with the role of Oracle. Neither had he known of the extent of Lunafreya's family's history, so that too is also of great interest to him.

There's also the connection between Lunafreya's family and Yugi's. Perhaps things are much more interconnected than he'd ever realized. ]

Maybe you should play a game against the Other Me sometime, Grandpa. See if you can still say you're great at games.

Oh, I'm past my prime, I don't need to be reminded of it...

[ Yugi smiles a bit. 'It just sounds like he's trying to get out of being beaten.'

Yugi does have one question on his mind. He tilts his head back to look at Lunafreya again. She stands there with her Trident across her still, hands holding it in a gentle fashion. So, the Oracle keeps the peace between worlds? The monsters in the Shadow Games are real... and that means they're the ones that she can talk to?

'I know your memories are lost, Other Me, but does anything about the Oracle sound familiar?' ]

So, what can you... do? How do you talk to them?

[ Lunafreya shares another glance towards Solomon who nods in approval. She looks back at the two, unaware if the Pharaoh is with them or not. [ we can just be ridiculous and spacey together, it's fine

Atem would never dream of forcing Solomon into anything he isn't comfortable with, but the fact remains that dueling him would be an honor.

For now, though, he just watches as Yugi gives their deck to Lunafreya, curious about what might happen when the Oracle meets the deck that they've put together.

But then she pulls out the Dark Magician, and he leans in a bit, both because he feels drawn to that monster in particular and because he wants to see what will happen next.

What does occur next is clearly something neither he nor Yugi were expecting. Dark Magician materializes right in front of them, and before Atem even knows what's happening, he's bowing to him. Confusion shows itself plainly on Atem's face as he watches this unfold. ]

I don't understand how this is happening. [ Well, he understands enough to know that somehow, Lunafreya's status as Oracle is making something happen to bring Dark Magician forward, but he doesn't understand this any more clearly than Yugi does. ]

[ Of course, Atem would be lying if he said he doesn't feel a connection to the Dark Magician, even though he doesn't fully know why. He's his favorite card, yes, but for reasons he barely understands, there's a feeling in the back of his mind that maybe the Dark Magician once meant much more to him, but with his memories sealed, he can't remember.

He listens thoughtfully as Lunafreya goes on to explain how she communicates with the monsters from the card game. To her, it seems as though they're much more than just monsters or cards, and that's a notion that he can agree with.

Then he turns to glance at Yugi, confusion still clear on his face, but now he just has more questions than before. ]

I suppose that I might have. I've always felt as though there was something drawing me to him, but I just thought that was because he was the card I played most often during duels. [ Or rather, most often when he found himself in a tight spot. ]

I wish that I could remember him as he truly is, not just as a card inside our deck.

[ Of course he can see him standing there in front of them, but that on its own does nothing to restore his sealed away memories.

Evidently, the Magician can see him just as easily as he can see Yugi, so Atem turns to face him next. ]

[ If Atem knew that Yugi was feeling that way, he'd insist that they shift the focus away from himself and back to Yugi. This is his house, his kitchen, and the rest of them are more or less guests there. Never mind that Atem's been Yugi's constant shadow for a long time now, but he never wants his friend to feel as though he doesn't belong, whether in a conversation or in anything else.

Knowing that Lunafreya can't see him, he turns to look her direction anyway. This must feel odd to her, speaking to someone that she can't even see, but he supposes she's seen odder things before. ]

If only I had half of his certainty. Neither Yugi or I know where to begin, except that we must participate in this tournament. [ And even then, that isn't really much of a signpost directing them where to go or what to do. ]

We can't even know that this is truly what we're meant to be doing. [ Oh, they've had some experiences that pointed them to this tournament, and of course, part of him still believes that it may be their destiny to do this, but it's difficult knowing that they won't know how everything fits until it happens. In that sense, Atem really does like to have everything laid out in front of him and arranged, thus eliminating some of the guessing.

This feels more like dominoes falling, and none of them know which way the pieces will fall. ]

It seems that at every turn, something else unexpected turns up. [ But even as he says that, he offers the Magician a fond sort of smile. He's in his deck for a reason, and there's no shaking the fond sort of familiarity he has for the magic user. If it's possible for them to learn how to communicate, then he'll put every effort into making that happen. ]

[ As Atem listens to Lunafreya converse with the Dark Magician and with Yugi, he finds himself feeling somewhat confused by his presence here, even though he's glad to see him, of course. Their next steps that extend beyond the tournament at hand still seem to be unclear to him, despite both his and Yugi's best efforts to try and work out what they should be or how they should look.

And neither can he see how what Lunafreya says applies to their current situation, but whether he can see it or not, the least he can do is listen to her words with respect. Everything has its meaning and importance, and he's certain there's a purpose behind all of this as well. ]

It seems as though you hold quite an important role, then, perhaps an even greater one than ours. [ He nods to Yugi then; they both have an important role to play, but somehow, Lunafreya's seems much more significant. He's always thought as much, just based on what she's told him so far; her words now only confirm that for him. She seems to be a bridge for the spirits, a guidepost for them, and that only makes his respect for her increase. ]

[ Atem just folds his hands together then as he ponders Lunafreya's words, knowing that she is ultimately correct. But what he and Yugi do isn't the only important thing. Lunafreya and her responsibilities are significant as well, and he's made up his mind that he won't ever view them as anything less than what they are. Her role might be passive, but that doesn't mean it's any less meaningful.

As for the Dark Magician and the assistance he offers, Atem is grateful for it as always. He's a mainstay of his deck, but he's much more than that, as Atem is beginning to realize. ]

I have a feeling that we may need both of you before the end. [ The end of what? This tournament? Perhaps... But there always seems to be some great challenge that rises up even as one is concluding.

Atem might not be able to see the future or know what is coming next, but he just has a feeling that both Lunafreya and the Dark Magician will have important roles to play as events unfold.

.... Or perhaps it's only wishful thinking talking. ]
