WAKING THE DRAGONS
( welcome to hurt/comfort the psl, where feels are here and the timeline doesn't matter! ♬ tone music )
[ There had been more than once when Lunafreya had questioned quietly why she remained in the orbit of the small band of duelists. The worry of the Egyptian Gods had concluded, and the Nameless Pharaoh able to not only contain but appease them. By conclusion of the event alone she should have said her goodbyes and moved onward. Yet, a feeling nagged in the back of her mind. One that insisted she stay with the small band in Japan. She always felt as if she imposed on anyone far too much if she acted outside of the realm of the Oracle.
What could she ever offer someone beyond that of her station?
Events escalated quickly as they seemed to with Yugi and the Pharaoh. A new enemy, a spirit monster that needed her aid to speak to them, promises made, and an ancient magic that stole souls of those that lost their battles. It was something she had never heard of -- the Power of Orichalcos. Gentiana had said it predated even her time in their reality... which simply made Lunafreya wonder what more help she could give to them. It was Gentiana that insisted they travel with the pair to the United States. Lunafreya after all spoke both languages and could easily aid them in where money might be a concern. She offered her aid, and yet, still felt as if she was an outsider looking in.
The price of being the Oracle is what she had always presumed.
Ravus had always insisted that she had become Oracle too young. It held her back from too much of life. The world could go without the aid of the Oracle long enough for her to have a life of her own. Lunafreya disagreed. It caused more than one argument that eventually led to the strained relationship the two of them had. One she felt might continue until he too was oddly supportive of the venture to America with Yugi and his friends. Perhaps he felt it was a way for her to have even the smallest fraction of life beyond her duty.
Not that any of it quite mattered the moment the group had returned from hunting down Rafael. Lunafreya had elected to stay with Téa and Rebecca; they would need protection should someone come for them. All she could do was stand by and watch the scene unfold as the strongest link in their group broke piece by piece. She wondered if it was obvious to the others that every time they mentioned "the other Yugi" or "get Yugi back" that a bit more of their Pharaoh seemed to wash away. She wished to interject and put a stop to their remarks, but, knew it would do little good. All of them were attempting to handle the shock and grief in their own ways.
She made sure their fare was covered to Flordia. The train ride then the plane ride that would be following it. Joey was over the moon, given their conversation with Kaiba had not been as supportive as they had hoped. Duke decided to stay back with Rebecca and her grandfather, leaving the rest of them to travel to themselves. Lunafreya sat beside Gentiana and simply listened to their conversations. Tristan and Joey attempted to carry on as normal, while Téa did her utmost to try and raise the spirits of their Pharaoh and distract him. It broke her heart to see their close group seemingly fall apart bit by bit. It hurt more to see the strongest of them all shut them out. She had even reached out to grab his sleeve as he had walked by on the train to leave them, but Gentiana had stopped her.
"A time and a place, Lady Lunafreya."
Arguments with the ancient spirit monster were futile and she knew that. Yet, Lunafreya had wanted to chastise her best friend for the first time. Those around her that had been entrusted in her care were hurting and she could do little to help. Gentiana, of course, seemed to know exactly what she was going to say. The colder hands held hers to reassure her.
The train ride was thankfully uneventful as was the ride to the hotel where they'd stay the night until the flight the next morning. With their things checked in, the group tried to fumble their way through the next plan. It was Joey who suddenly elected that he, Tristan and Téa would go to dinner and they would all meet up before their flight. Gentiana supported the notion, even agreeing to go with them. Lunafreya stood in place for a moment, then two, a she debated which path to take. While it was an obvious answer, the young woman had always had difficulty moving to her heart if it felt conflicted with that of her duty.
Lunafreya stops outside the door for the room set aside for Atem. She has dressed in clothing that might seem unusual to her, but, she would rather not bring attention to herself as they attempted to move eastward. She raises her hand to the door and knocks gently with her knuckles. ]
Heika?
[ It's such a formal way of speaking, but, she notices the tone she says it in now. There is an air of endearment, personal respect, and care to it. Almost more akin to a personal nickname than a title. ]

All he knows is that he let his pride and rage block out everything else, and in his complete selfishness, he let Yugi pay the price for his own mistakes. And to him, that's utterly unforgivable.
He's registered bits and pieces about the group's plan to go to Florida in search of clues, and there's been talk about catching a train to the airport and leaving from there, but essentially, he's just been along for the ride: not speaking, not looking at anyone... Even the sound of Kaiba's voice on the video call and the diatribe that followed didn't manage to rouse him from his stupor.
The only thing that's registering with him so far is the occasional mentions of Yugi and getting him back, and with each one, something inside him breaks apart even further. It's his fault that Yugi's gone, and he'd do anything to get him back, but is he even worthy of having anything to do with Yugi and his friends anymore?
In the moments that he's alone, he alternates between sitting or standing still, because there's no meaning to anything anymore except for his own failure. He's even pulled out his deck of cards and contemplated putting them aside forever. Was Kaiba wrong when he labeled him a disgrace, unworthy of holding the title King of Games? He doesn't believe so. Even now, as he looks at his deck, it feels as though every monster contained within it is turning away from him in disgust. And what's more, he can almost feel the heat of disapproval coming from the three Egyptian gods that reside inside it.
He's not fit to own them, nor to call himself a friend to Yugi or the others. The rest of the train ride passes relatively uneventfully, with Atem keeping to himself, unable to bring himself to rejoin the others, not even Luna and Gentiana. In his mind, he just imagines all of them looking at him with hate and judgment in their eyes, and he knows it can't be any worse than the own hate he's directing at himself.
Finally, when they reach their temporary destination, they all go their separate ways: Joey, Tristan, and Téa leaving for dinner, with Gentiana coming along as well. Atem's already sequestered himself in his designated room, and he's not really certain what Lunafreya's doing.
He's already been alone for the majority of the train trip, but even now, he's still not in the right mindset to be around others. That harsh inner voice of his chastises him, telling him he can't trust himself around anyone ever again, because what happens if his rage awakens and someone else winds up hurt? It's a risk he can't take, and thus he can't allow himself to put others in that position again.
The room is quiet, almost to the point of being overwhelmingly so, but it doesn't matter. Atem balls his fists in front of him, and he feels tears threatening at the corners of his eyes. But he hasn't allowed himself to cry, not since the moments immediately following Yugi's loss. Nothing will ever matter again, and how could anything ever be the same again?
Even if somehow, they manage to restore Yugi's soul and bring him back, how could he even bring himself to look his partner in the eyes?
He's ignored all furniture in the room: the bed, the chair at the desk, opting to sit on the floor with his back to the wall. That's where he is when he hears the quiet knock on the door and the equally quiet voice, and he just lets his head drop, gaze falling to the floor. He thinks he knows who it is that's standing outside the door, but she's one of the last people he wants to see. Her quiet understanding and compassion would undo him now, because there is no understanding for what he's done. And he's the last person who deserves compassion. Surely, she'll leave when her knocks go unanswered, because he has no intention of standing up to let her in.
It's best for everyone if he be left alone. None of them might realize that or accept it, but it's what he wants. ]

It has been clear there will be no answer verbally or non-verbally. She frowns, fingers toying with one another as the realization sits in. Most would decide to simply leave him to his misery at that point. She, however, has been known to be steadfast and far more stubborn than most might believe. A glance is sent in either direction of the hallway before she opens the door just enough to let herself in.
There is already a point to make formulating in her mind as her eyes adjust to the unlit room. She notes the open curtains and the evening moonlight starting to filter in. Her hand stretches out to summon her Trident, taking a few more steps further in the room. A bed, chair, desk, and television for general entertainment. It is quite standard for a hotel room... with the exception of a discarded duel disk and deck on the desk as well. Lunafreya frowns at the sight, but focuses her attention on the man she's looking for. Then, she sees him, tucked against a wall and on the floor.
She moves to stand in front of him. There is no expectation he will answer as he has yet to do so far. Instead, she waits for him to adjust to her presence. No rash or sudden movements. Everything she does is done with a certain level of precision and care. She lowers herself to sit down in front of him, laying her Trident across her lap and folding her hands over it. A few moments later she reaches out and gently places her hand on his knee. Her eyes never break from where his eyesight would be if he were to raise his head to look at her. ]
Heika.
[ Soft, gentle. There are no questions, no prodding for him to move or to speak. No attempts to cheer him up or motivate him to make the next move. A simple word to let him know she is there in the room and will not be leaving him.
She is angry at herself for listening to Gentiana for so long. What if he has thought she did not care about his state of being? What if he thinks she has thrown him to the side because he has failed one duel? The mere idea that someone might think her so shallow is frustrating and infuriating, but, now is not the time for that. She can speak to Gentiana when the time comes. ]

There's no room for anyone else inside what might as well be a locked cell for himself and his dark thoughts. A person like Luna, who is all light and grace, doesn't need to have anything to do with someone like him.
So he remains unaware when the door opens and she slips inside, even when the small crack of light spilling in from the hallway slowly widens. His head is still dropped low, as if he no longer has the energy to hold it up, knowing this is a very unbecoming position, even for a displaced Pharaoh, but believing that no one is here to observe him, he abandons his usual posture for no posture at all.
That is, until he hears quiet steps approaching him, and he knows that can only mean one thing. He is not alone in this room, not anymore. That notion is confirmed when he registers a hand resting softly on his knee. He feels rather than sees her sitting in front of him, Trident within easy reach.
Then he hears her voice, and that word she's called him almost since their first meeting. It does nothing to rouse him this time, but he does have just one thing to say to her. ]
Please, leave.
[ He isn't angry with her for not coming earlier than this, nor does he think she delayed because she doesn't care. It would have been better if she hadn't come at all, but knowing what he does about her kindness and her caring nature, it isn't surprising.
But now that she is here, he can't have her stay. This isn't a duel; the Orichalcos card isn't present, and yet he feels that he's too dangerous to be close to. What if he loses control of himself again? There's no telling who might be caught up in the danger, and he wouldn't be able to live with himself if something happened to her too, so soon after losing Yugi. ]

It does more than sting. It aches to see him in such a way. It hurts to be pushed away in the manner he has.
The reaction to pull away and follow his request is strong. A temptation to recoil in her own pain of rejection. There is no way for him to know how or why his words sting. It takes Lunafreya a fleeting moment to realize herself. She had not come to aid him as the Oracle would to the Pharaoh, but as the girl would to the boy who needs someone at his side. It is a very subtle difference and not one she would think even the keenest of minds would see. So rarely does Lunafreya act as herself first instead of the Oracle that many might not even know the difference.
There are so many ways she could phrase what she needs to. So many, in fact, that it takes her another moment to decide on which to say. ]
No, I won't. [ An ounce of formality drops in her speech. She once argued with her brother on what was the right path to take; the right action. While the urge to recoil in her own reaction lingers, Lunafreya refuses to move from her decision. ] Not yet.
[ Her other hand curls tightly along the grip of the Trident. It is hard for her to speak so plainly of her own emotions or desires... let alone ask for acceptance at such a personal level. Still, she feels this is what she should do.
She lifts the Trident from her lap only to rest it long side the both of them. Then, she pushes it away. A metaphoric show of the weight behind her words. She is not here as the Oracle, but as Luna. Her other hand raises from his knee to rest over his hand. Those tears still gather in her eyes. ]
I won't tell you to put on a brave face for the world. I won't say that you need to think of our next steps, or even where we might be going. I won't force you to fight or to commune with your gods.
[ She won't mention how Yugi is gone. It is obvious and the lack of his presence can be felt by all of them. ]
Please, let me stay with you for even a little while, Yami-sama.

Everyone falls eventually, and now he too knows what it's like to fall. Others have called the lofty way he carries himself arrogance and pride, and he's never really disagreed, but even though he's never put a label on it, it's always seemed like a carryover from his past life, a remnant of how he used to be when he was Pharaoh.
Some disdain him for it, others just accept it as part of who he is, but now in the wake of all this, he's beginning to realize just how blind he was to the truth.
He is no better than anyone else.
But it isn't until Luna quietly states her intention to not leave him that he finally lifts his head to look at her. Even so, when he forces his gaze to meet hers, the spark that's always there has fled, leaving only a dull emptiness behind.
He glances to the side when she moves the Trident from its place close at hand, but he doesn't comment on that either.
The blankness in his eyes doesn't lessen even as his glance travels down to where her hand rests on his. He can't even begin to understand how she can be so steadfast in the face of so much trial and difficulty, even when she knows the wrong that he's committed.
He opens his mouth to say something, to express his surprise that she can even stand to be around him, but his normally confident voice falters.
Earlier, when it was just him alone in the silence of the hotel room, he had wanted to scream about the unfairness of it all, but neither words nor sound would come. But even giving voice to his emotions wouldn't have eased the storm in his heart.
It isn't until she uses that name, a name she hasn't spoken until this very moment that he forces himself to make genuine eye contact with her.
But he still doesn't speak, just stares, hollow-eyed, as if he's never seen anyone quite like her before and can't find the words to explain how he feels: unworthy when he's in the presence of Yugi's friends, and even more so when faced with Luna's calm and understanding.
He's a storm, wild and unrelenting, and for that reason, Yugi's paying the price for his error. ]

The look in his eyes is heartbreaking. The implications of what Yugi had said during their first conversation strikes her in that moment. Atem had no memories of who he was before Yugi completed the Millennium Puzzle. All he knew was what Yugi did through his emotions. Their unique situation made it so the two were inseparable. He could not remember a time without the younger soul at his side. It is an irreplaceable bond and it has now been shattered. Lunafreya wonders if his friends truly understand what that that means to the man in front of her. Do they begin to fathom the loneliness he must be feeling?
She makes a decision in that moment that she will never back away from. No matter what may come. That decision is what gives her look a subtle confidence to reassure him.
Of course she had never forgotten the name he had given her when they first met. It simply felt right to address him in a proper way to respect his once title and birthright. If anything, it was a formality tinted with affection. Now was not the time for titles or formalities. The old soul in front of her had thrown down the mantle of kingship, and therefore addressing him in such a way would only push him further away.
His gaze hardly unsettles her. Most stare when they realize her healing abilities, or just at how formal she remains in the modern world. It feels far more personal to Lunafreya then the countless faces she has aided over her short time as Oracle. It could be a simple matter of her internalizing things, believing what she wishes to see. He may not even return the deep affection she has for him. After all, she has only come to see it herself since this downward spiral began.
All that she can hope is that he sees her as herself in this moment.
If he is a storm then it must be her charge to calm them.
Lunafreya moves then - Slowly, deliberately so he can see every movement - and settles beside him. Her hand curls around his to hold it in her lap where her Trident once was. Small little motions that speak with greater meaning. Ever true to her word, she says nothing and gives him the time to do as he wishes. ]

A shadow seems to fall over his eyes like a curtain being drawn as he thinks back to the things Rafael said to him. At first, he wanted to dismiss the words as sheer nonsense, but the more he's thought about it, the more he's realized the man could be right. Without his memories of his past life, who is to say that he wasn't truly an evil Pharaoh?
That thought, combined with Yugi's loss, is enough to crush him and send what's left of his heart breaking into even smaller pieces. It isn't just the emptiness and loneliness he feels with Yugi being gone that's troubling him so greatly. It's the fear that maybe he wasn't the benevolent ruler he assumed he was; that in reality, he was feared and hated by his own subjects.
Was he cruel to them? Did he send them to their deaths as punishment? His hands clench back into fists at that thought. If that's the case, then could this be his own punishment? Being deprived of his memories and made to reside as a spirit inside a magical object for the rest of eternity? It's a strange sort of punishment, if so, but his worried thoughts are conjuring up all sorts of unsettling scenarios.
As he's looking at Luna, he's wishing he could voice even half of the fears running through his mind, but then another fear rears up, larger and louder than the rest. If he can't regain his voice, and acknowledge her for staying by his side when he doesn't deserve it, what if she decides to leave him after all?
He's not sure when Lunafreya, the Oracle, became so important to him, or how it happened so quickly, but at some point in the course of their conversations, she made a place for herself in his heart and in his life, and the thought of losing that so suddenly just adds to the weight that's pressing him down.
It isn't until she shifts, settling in closer next to him and reaching to take hold of his hand that some of the doubt and fear that's been keeping him frozen cracks. It hasn't broken completely, but small cracks are forming, and the ice hasn't begun to freeze over again just yet. ]
Luna... [ His voice sounds hoarse and foreign to his ears. ] How can you still be beside me, after everything that I've done?
[ He has more that he wants to say, but his emotions are rising again and threatening to choke him, so he's forced to stop there. ]

:( and the breakdown continues, sorry atem
Kaiba had been deadly serious when he said he had no interest in dealing with losers. People that couldn't stand, fight, and hold onto something so important. It set an anger inside him that Yugi could be beaten by someone that none of them had heard of. At least Bandit Keith lost to Pegasus of all people. Then again, in his own way, it showed how much Kaiba respected Yugi as a duelist. Yugi the duelist of course to him is Atem, and he very much doesn't see the point in dueling the Little Yugi.
And for all his talk of not wanting to deal with occult superstition, Pharaohs, destiny, and magic? Some part of him does know that it is very much real. He knows there's an ancient spirit inside that stupid upside down pyramid that Yugi wears. He knows the God Cards house real living creatures (somehow), and he knows that he battled the Yugi he recognizes all those years ago in Ancient Egypt. Admitting all of that means admitting the fact that he can't control any of it -- and like hell he is going to do that.
It shouldn't be too much of a surprise then, for those that can read Kaiba like a book, that he shows up at the small little town in America. It isn't hard to track where the call from Joey came from. Hell, Kaiba wouldn't have bothered with any of it if there wasn't something very important that Yugi - Atem - keeps in his deck. If Atem was going to lose his title to a nobody, then, he didn't have the right to what is in his deck in Kaiba's mind.
Mokuba shouts from the car on the street that they shouldn't bother with it. Doma - Paradius - can be dealt with other ways. Kaiba would normally agree, but this time, their enemy isn't just in the mystical bullshit realm of Egyptian magic. It isn't just in their game of choice to wage battle. They own a part of every major corporation and have taken control of his company. Which means he needs all the firepower he can get if Atem has already been stricken down.
He walks into the hotel with a calmness and ease. A simple question in near perfected English grants him the information he wants. What room is Yugi Muto staying in? Because, everything is done under Yugi's name. The losers haven't figured out how to cover their tracks well. Long purple coat hanging off his shoulders and typical attire for a duel in mind, Kaiba quietly walks outside the office and down the doors. Then, he stops outside the one he is looking for. With a brief exhale he steels himself for what should be a heated battle of words.
He ignores the Do Not Disturb sign and throws the door open with all the force he can. Just to make his point. ]
Yugi--
[ The rest of what he was going to say catches in his throat as his eyes widen. It's not a sight he expected to see.
It's not the drawn curtains or the fact that damn golden necklace is on the nightstand. It's the discarded clothing on top of a Duel Disk, the shoes and gloves on the floor, and the person in bed beside the former Duel King. Kaiba recognizes her instantly of course.
What the hell is she doing in the bed next to Atem?
He didn't have the impression the two were that close. Allies because of the Ishtar debacle, but not like this. It's not even the fact that Atem might be intimate with anyone that's shocking. It's purely the fact of who it is and the fact that Kaiba clearly has missed out on something.
He swears to god, if it's a woman that's distracted him from dueling that made him lose his title...
During his mental gymnastics, the light has poured in, and his sharp loud voice has made Lunafreya sit to attention. Her tired eyes meet Kaiba's instantly. Despite the exhaustion on her face, there is a fire in her eyes that brims with the determination to fight anyone that might come for the Pharaoh she watches over. Her hand stops midway to her Trident the moment she realizes who is standing in the doorway. ]
Kaiba-sama...
What the hell are you doing here? [ Kaiba barks the question as if he has the right to ask it. He asks his next question in English: ] 'Don't you have some adoring public to go take care of?'
[ Lunafreya glares at the callous statement he makes. Kaiba doesn't care. He steps uninvited into the room and crosses his arms. His eyes go straight to the tri-colored haired former Duel King beside her. ]
'I'm here to talk to him,' [ he doesn't even want to say Atem's adopted name and continues in her native language, ] 'as a duelist. It doesn't concern you. Leave.'
[ Lunafreya sits defiantly in his demands and it makes his blood boil. She is infuriating. Everything around her is infuriating because of magic. ]
Fine, [ this time he speaks in his native language. His sharp gaze moves back to Atem. Part of him still can't figure out this whole arrangement. ] Yugi. You have something that belongs to me and I'm here to collect it.
it's okay, we can fix him... eventually
But until the sun began to rise, peeking through a crack in the curtains, it was just Atem alone with his thoughts.
It isn't until he hears the door being thrown open with a loud crash and feels rather than sees Luna sit up next to him. He dimly recognizes the silhouette of the person who's just let himself into the room, and he thinks he recognizes that voice as well, even though it's full of a taut sort of anger tinged with frustration and derision directed at Luna.
Still, he doesn't have any more will or energy to sit up and pay attention to whatever Kaiba's saying, so he remains in the same position that he's been nearly all night.
When Kaiba finally addresses him directly, using Yugi's name, it's enough to get him to snap back to attention. But still, he doesn't speak, barely comprehending what Kaiba's saying: something belongs to him that he wants, and he's come here to get it. But he can't think of what that might be; as far as he knows, neither he nor Yugi had anything that rightfully belonged to Kaiba.
He just sits there next to Luna, still motionless, still unspeaking. If there's something that he wants, his few possessions are on the desk and the Puzzle is on the nightstand. Not that he wants Kaiba taking the Puzzle, or that he can imagine Kaiba wanting it in the first place, but whatever he's here for, he's in no mood to put up a fight. He could even go through his deck and take what he wants, and he wouldn't blink an eye.
Maybe that's really why he's here. It's a delayed realization, and it's still muted by all the self-reproach he's still throwing at himself, but maybe Kaiba's here to take the god cards. Well, he can have them. He doesn't need to be told by anyone that he isn't fit to own them anymore. ]
well alright /gets the plot bonking devices
Although, he stands there, arms crossed, and pushes down the feeling of discomfort that rolls up his spine. This must have been what he looked like to Mokuba and the staff in the mansion after he lost to Atem and lost his mind. If Kaiba was a gentler person, he'd almost be envious that someone is there at Atem's side to put the pieces back together. Except he's not, and all it does is bring further strained memories up of their earlier dueling careers. That and brings a feeling of disgust that someone like Atem is going to lay down near-dead after one god damn loss. ]
This is pathetic, even for you, Yugi. I expected more out of the Duel King.
[ Lunafreya stands from the bed then, an arm reaching out in front of the man on the bed. Kaiba's sharp gaze flicks back to her and narrows. The way she stands there with determination to protect him would have been respectable, maybe even something worth noting, if Atem wasn't a useless sack. ]
'That is enough, Kaiba-sama. Nothing here belongs to you. You refused to help when they asked. I see no reason for you to be here.'
God, you're annoying. Do you just hang around him like some love struck puppy dog? Even when he's like this? [ A hand raises to gesture to Atem. ] He lost his title to some chump. If he's going to give up dueling and waste away then those cards don't belong to him. They belong to me.
'They are Gods! You cannot claim ownership of them!' [ Lunafreya crosses over to the taller man, head held high and defiant. ] 'Their respect must be earned and their blessings given! Anyone that is not worthy to wield them cannot even begin to summon them, let alone hold them in their possession!'
Oh, that's right. You said you can talk to them. [ He leans forward just a fraction in an attempt to use his height over her to intimidate her. His voice is filled with sarcasm and disrespect for whatever her made up calling is. ] Then you can tell them that the person who wields them is a waste of their time and yours. Go on then, make my plight to them. Maybe burn some incenses and offerings. That's what you pretend to do, isn't it? Be some ancient temple woman worshiping and appealing to gods so maybe they won't hurt you and the people below. I don't have the time for this nonsense, Fleuret. Move.
[ Despite his tone and posture, Kaiba isn't harsh when he raises his hand and pushes Lunafreya out of his way. In fact, he wonders if it'll even get a rouse out of Atem if the woman that's bothering to care for him is shoved around. Given that despondent look and lack of engagement? Probably not. It makes the situation easier, even with the rising feeling in the back of his mind that it is an unworthy way to take such powerful cards. Lunafreya is right about one thing -- things should be earned.
He shoves the shawl and coat away from the Duel Disk and throws his other hand up to keep Lunafreya away from what he's doing. It'd be easy to just toss her to the other side of the room based on height differences alone. But, he'd rather not get Yugi's annoying cheer squad on his back. With a quick flick of his fingers he gets the deck released from the disk and puts his hand over it. A shock runs up through his arm then. There's a pain in side of his head that makes him pull his hand back, knocking Lunafreya back a few steps as he recoils. ]
'I told you. You cannot just claim them as if they are simple pieces of paper.'
[ Kaiba turns his cold gaze back to Lunafreya and then looks at Atem. How the hell can the God Cards still want this pompous ritual at a time like this? They'd rather sit unused and disregarded by their wielder? That can't be it. Gods can't be that stupid. ]
Yugi--[ sharp, quick, demanding of attention. ] Are you going to continue this fight or not?
no subject
But still, it's not enough to break him free of the state of unresponsiveness that he's been in ever since he lost Yugi, and while Luna and Kaiba continue throwing barbs at each other, his hands grab onto the blankets, forming fists around the fabric. His frame is rigid, tension showing in each muscle, and when Kaiba throws those words at him about expecting more from the Duel King, he only has one thing to say.
It's said in a quiet tone, but there's tension in it too. ] I'm not the Duel King, Kaiba. [ Not anymore. He has no right to that title, or anything that connects him with the world of Duel Monsters.
And then having said that, his gaze drops down to the covers on the bed, still bunched up in his hands, as if saying those words used up the very last remnants of strength that he had.
He sits there in silence once more as Luna argues vehemently with Kaiba, and Kaiba throws retorts back at her. But it's not until he pushes Luna aside that Atem's head snaps back up again. It's only for a second, but there's a flash of fire in those normally striking eyes of his.
Kaiba asked if he was going to continue the fight, and while he feels he has no will or strength left to fight anyone, he's not about to let him push Luna around. ]
You've done enough here, Kaiba. [ Atem's words are still quiet, his tone flat. But he speaks decisively enough for someone who's still floating lost in a storm. ] Take the cards if you must. Will they answer to you? [ That's something you'll have to find out for yourself. He knows that Luna's right; if Kaiba truly wants control over the god cards, then he'll have to win them from him in a duel.
Except he has no intention of putting on that Duel Disk ever again, let alone stepping into a dueling ring. So whether Kaiba takes them or not, it doesn't matter to him. What does matter is that he wants him to leave, but something tells him that despite his stated intention, he won't be satisfied with just grabbing the deck of cards and leaving. ]

Kaiba's ice blue gaze stays on Atem as he finally speaks. He missed the comment about no longer being the Duel King, but, Kaiba would be the first to agree that he isn't. Nothing about how Atem sits or speaks commands the presence of the man that fought him or Marik in Battle City. It might be tragic if Kaiba didn't hold the other duelist in such high regard. He may have missed it, but Lunafreya certainly didn't. ]
I haven't done anything here yet, Yugi. [ The Gods are still in Atem's deck, he's still in this small American town, and he's still in the presence of the annoyingly steadfast woman. Maybe if things had been different and Kaiba had a bit more of an open mind he'd respect Lunafreya a bit more. For now, he gave some notice to her healing abilities and the fact no one died in his tournament. It saved him a public relations nightmare. ] We both know one card will answer to me. You won it from me in Battle City.
I think the question is: do they answer you?
[ He already knows the answer. Kaiba will never admit it out loud but he could tell the rage that seeps off those cards. He has no idea what Atem did to anger all three Gods, but, he certainly managed it. ]
Unlike you, I have no intentions of letting Doma or their plans for my company happen. Even if that resorts to your annoying world of occult and magic. I won't let some bastard take away my dream.
[ Lunafreya steps forward, but, Kaiba holds his hand up to motion for her to stay in place. He slides the deck back into the Duel Disk and picks it up. In a flash second, Kaiba throws the Duel Disk onto the bed for it to land right at Atem's hands. His arms cross as he glares down at the former duelist. He can take those cards and they'd be useless outside of Obelisk. What he needs to do is prove to the Gods that Atem has no intention of ever wielding them again. ]
If the God Cards aren't going to leave without me proving myself? We'll do it your way, Fleuret. [ There's no room for argument in his tone. The hand curls into a fist, leaving one finger up for her to be quiet. ] If you're not going to talk to them or do whatever magic it is you claim you can do? We'll duel. I'm not leaving until I have those cards, and I hear you have a flight to catch.
So, pick it up, Yugi. The least you could do is go out losing to me if you're renouncing being a duelist. I'll be outside and we'll settle this rivalry once and for all.
[ He turns and leaves the room slamming it shut behind him. Does he intend to hold a duel in the middle of a parking lot in a hotel? No. The hotel is on the edge of town so it doesn't take more than a few minutes to reach a distance that's more or less away from it all.
Lunafreya stands there looking at the door for a moment. She lowers her hands and turns back to the bed. Her gaze drops to the Duel Disk. Part of her hopes that this is Kaiba's strange way of attempting to help Atem... but she wonders if he is capable of such a notion. She comes to stand at the foot of the bed, kneeling down so she might look the Pharaoh in the eyes. ]
What will you do, Yami?

He manages to raise his head just enough to look at Kaiba as he continues talking, most of his words falling on ears that can no longer hear, because their owner has no desire to.
Before Kaiba even throws the Duel Disk at him, and before he issues his challenge, Atem thinks he knows where this is going, even with his muddled thoughts. He wants him to pick up his deck and duel him to prove that he no longer has the right to keep the God Cards.
But there is a problem with that: it isn't just the God Cards that have rebelled. His whole deck has. He doesn't even have to be holding it to sense that every card that it contains has turned away from him. It's only right, considering how easily and quickly he threw them all away, even his most cherished monsters.
To stand up and face Kaiba in a duel is more than he can bear, and yet the man's challenge stands, seemingly glaring at him as if it, too, is disgusted by the sight. The slamming of the door all but rattles Atem's bones, but he stays where he is, on the bed, thoughts churning about what to do next.
It isn't until Luna approaches the bed and lowers herself down, presenting her question, that he looks up again. That fire that flashed briefly in his eyes has been extinguished, replaced once again by a dull sort of sheen. For a moment, he thinks his voice has deserted him yet again, but after a moment passes, he finally says: ]
How can I face him in a duel? [ The strength and will has gone, but he also knows that he has no choice. ] I know he won't leave until he's gotten what he wants.
[ So with that in mind, with what feels like a monumental effort, he pushes himself up into a standing position, reaching for the Duel Disk with shaking hands and slowly making his way to the door.
All he can do is duel Kaiba one last time and lose, but if that's what he has to do to get him to leave, then so be it. ]

Her hand raises to stroke his hair as he had done for her but moments ago. She can feel the body he inhabits finally begin to relax in her arms. Lunafreya continues the gentle motion even once he does drift into his slumber. A small smile takes to her face as she places a kiss to the top of his head once again. Exhaustion begins to claim her as well. She does not fight it. Instead, she tilts her head to rest against the top of his and closes her eyes. Sleep takes her in a matter of moments.
All she can hope is that he finds some reprieve from his troubles for a few hours. ]

Everything is quiet until several more hours have passed, and something shifts in Atem's posture and the relaxed expression on his face. His brow furrows and a frown forms, as a confusing blend of images and voices blur together in his mind's eye, replaying Yugi's soul being taken, Dartz throwing sharp words at him that were only meant to hurt, and inexplicably, Ra blasting him with his fiery attack.
He gives an involuntary jerk while still remaining asleep, and in the dream that's rapidly shifting into more of a nightmare, he sees himself engulfed in flames, burning into ashes, while Yugi's soul is pulled out of his reach, being absorbed into a great monstrous creature.
And while all of this is going on, another scene that hasn't happened, and hopefully never will, plays itself out for his benefit. He witnesses Lunafreya being forcibly pulled away from him as the Seal of Orichalcos threatens to encircle her, feeling her fear and desperation as her soul is sealed away, just as Yugi's has been.
At first, Atem remains silent, but it isn't until he realizes that above the scenes of terror and carnage, a great darkness is looming over them all.
Zorc...!
The name springs unbidden to his sleeping mind, and with the recollection of that name, a great fear takes hold of Atem, causing him to suddenly thrash wildly as he lies beside Lunafreya. The somewhat peaceful sleep that he'd enjoyed for those few hours is rapidly becoming a distant memory, drowned out by the unconscious reactions he's having to everything that's happened to him lately.
Each scene feels disjointed, not playing itself out seamlessly, but even as one image ends, another one takes its place, each overlapping with the other and creating one long terrifying nightmare that he can't wake himself up from however hard he tries. ]

The involuntary movement he first makes is what wakes her. Lunafreya's eyes snap open at the sudden motion. A moment passes before her eyes truly focus to see his knitted brow and frowning expression. She does not wait to take action. She pushes herself to sit up, her hand letting go of his in order to rest on his arm. The other rests on his face as she tries to gently shift him onto his back. ]
Heika? [ Her own name for him slips out on sheer habit at first. She gives him a gentle shake with the hand on his shoulder as she tries to rouse him.
Then, he begins thrashing about. Lunafreya does her best to keep him in one place - to anchor him. A spike of panic rushes through her then. A nightmare after all he has been through is not surprising. If anything, she should have expected it, and she chastises herself inwardly for not thinking of it more.
She frowns as he has yet to wake and leans over him, giving him another gentle shake. ]
Yami!
no subject
Lunafreya's attempt to shake him doesn't go unnoticed either, but he's still trapped inside his nightmare, and his mind turns that into Lunafreya turning on him and all but tossing him away from her as one would throw away trash.
His limbs are still flailing as he tries to fight off the hold the nightmare has on him, but it isn't done with him just yet. Now he sees Yugi shouting that name at him, but there's nothing but hate in his gaze, and all the while, Zorc looms over everything. A sound that's a mixture of a distressed cry and a moan escapes him, but he still can't manage to free himself from the nightmare's grip.
Outwardly, his struggles against the harrowing images conjured up by his mind seem to increase out of sheer panic, reflecting the terror he's experiencing inside the nightmare. Gradually, however, his movements begin to lessen, but waking up seems to take longer, as if the nightmare is reluctant to let him go. ]

She watches the way he thrashes and one detail sticks out to her. He moves as if his back is in pain. It speaks to her that the wound he and Yugi received from the Sun God must be in pain. Her hands squeeze his before she closes her eyes. Drawing upon her magical energy is not a difficult task when she is not exhausted. Now, however, she can feel how taxed her body has become without rest or food. Still, she forces her body to comply. She did not go through the trails and training as a young woman to only be the Oracle when she is comfortable. Her hands envelope in a gentle glow. Then, she leans down to place her forehead to his.
The point is not to heal when his wound is already healed. She merely intends to give comfort and warmth through the dream that has gripped him so. ]
no subject
When she uses her magical energy to counteract the terror of his nightmare, he arches his back, nearly rising off the bed as the pain intensifies for just a few moments before the warmth and comfort of her magic breaks through. He falls back onto the bed, and this time, he remains still, no longer fighting against the terror his mind has created.
A few more minutes pass before he slowly awakens and his eyes open as he tries to pull himself together once again, the lingering images from the nightmare still fresh in his mind. It takes him a moment to realize that Lunafreya is poised right above him, their foreheads pressed together. ]

at this rate they probably don't want bail
tbh they're probably perfectly happy right where they are
>:( leave them in jail, come get them in the endgame
Atem just sits back like he's totally okay with this
Luna just next to the throne in jail (tho it's not very horny jail now)
best wife or best wife? that's Atem's question.
thats hard to pick between tbh, understandable question
yep he's just like, can't choose. oh well
Truly a loss either way he picks ffff
he's just gonna sit on the fence then pfft
then i guess he gets both options! :O

hahah they're such a pair, always being so hard on themselves
/rolls this thread up
fast forward to morning~ and Atem just is content to watch Luna sleep
Eventually, though, the sun begins to rise and although the room they're in has curtains at the windows, some light still leaks through. Atem stirs and he turns over to face Lunafreya as she sleeps.
He hasn't fully awoken yet, but his eyes open just a fraction, and the sight of her sleeping is enough to bring a small smile to his face. He doesn't intend to disturb her, of course, and he may very well nod off again before she wakes up, but for now, he just intends to lie beside her and watch her sleep. It seems as though both of them have earned their rest. ]
if the world wasn't ending they would just stay in bed all morning
She remains asleep. Perhaps, on some, level she is aware he has stated to wake up. If only because a hand reaches over to him. Her own sleep has not been filled with nightmares or anything that might torment her. No, instead, it has been something of a dreamless void.
His given name is mumbled in her sleep as if she is looking for him. ]
he wishes they could D:
But his companion and helper remains asleep, at least for the moment, even though she reaches for him with one hand. The movement causes his smile to widen, as does the way she mumbles his name.
Still, he lies there unmoving, just wanting to take in this moment for as long as it lasts. As soon as they are both fully awake, reality will inevitably set back in, and he'll have to face it, whatever it brings. He's not in any hurry for that. Instead, he reaches out carefully and slowly to touch a lock of hair that's fallen across her face as she sleeps. ]
maybe once zorc is gone 8(
On some level she is aware of the waking world. She does not wish to wake just yet. It would mean going back to the troubles and looming monster that threatens to devour all the souls it can. That, of course, is why she should wake. Still... she would rather remain asleep beside him. ]
Atem over here just looking forward to that
If she rebuffs him, of course he'll withdraw. For now, though, he's all right with just lying beside her until she awakens properly and they can no longer ignore the responsibility that waits just outside this room. ]
defeat the big evil, recieve sleep in with the wife
And, as to his worry? She already sees herself belonging to him as much as she claims him. She will gladly be whatever he wishes her to be in return for allowing her to serve him however he needs. ]
sounds like a good reward to him
;A; gets his memories, to be with his partner, and sleep in with the wife. 10/10 ending
now that's the true ending right there
