But I hardly knew what I was doing most of the time. Either I got lucky by finding the right clues when I needed them, or something directed me where I needed to go. Usually it was both. Does that really count as stopping anything on my own?

[ He looks down at his hands for a second before looking back up at her, and there's a sudden flash of resolve in his eyes. ] If you say the Bureau can help, well- I know that I can trust you, so... I'll cooperate.

[ He's willing to cooperate because now he knows that she's involved, and the connection they have is what makes him want to trust her and work with her. ]

Always? You can't separate...? [ He looks momentarily confused; his only frame of reference, aside from her and Polaris, is the Dark Presence and how it consumes people, but Jesse hasn't been consumed. She's not mindlessly repeating words like the Taken do. ] That's a good thing, isn't it? [ He asks, needing the confirmation. ]

I barely remember what I did, though. That feels like a lifetime ago now.

[ That's another thing that's bothering him about all this; how is he supposed to fix this if he barely knows what he's supposed to do? How can he find a version of the story that fixes everything if he doesn't even know what his next move is? He really could use some inspiration right now, but it seems as though inspiration has turned its back on him.

He finally manages to do what's been lurking in the back of his mind and give her a hug, but then he immediately wonders if he did the wrong thing once she starts speaking again. He can hear the emotion in her voice even if he can't see the look on her face. ]

But you're not just firepower. You're not just a weapon. [ There's a lengthy pause and a brief struggle seems to play itself out on Alan's face. ] You're Jesse. You're Jesse, and I care about you, even if this stupid story is getting in the way of that.

[ Her continued words wash over him, some of them landing like a ton of bricks, but in the end, he has to admit she's right. The only problem is, he doesn't know what he's supposed to do if he doesn't go off on his own to lure out the Dark Presence. ]

If I don't do that, then- what should I do? I don't want to leave you, and I don't want to go off alone, but what the hell am I supposed to do? No, don't answer that.

[ It's not something she can help with, is it? He has to figure out what he's going to do, but maybe she can offer some suggestions, if nothing else. ]
