[ If he could talk, he'd emphasize how he didn't mean to say she's not allowed to cry. She's allowed to feel every emotion in existence if she wanted to; he just doesn't want her being sad or crying because of him. All he wants for her is to be happy, to be content and to feel safe and loved and... for Tony, knowing that she's crying because of him is the opposite of all that. In a way, it feels like he's failed her if he can't give her a life with as much happiness as it's possible for them to have.

But if anyone should be blamed for how so many lives were disrupted, it should be the people responsible for the disruption. Thanos is just one of those people.

Tony might be pulled down by sedation and by the physical state that he's in after the surgery, but he's not fully resting either. Perhaps the best way of describing it is by calling it a state of 50% rest and 50%... not rest. But then Little Mermaid places her hand on his chest, he stills almost instantly, except for the slow rise and fall as he breathes. He listens as she gives her explanation of what the team has been doing, and how Steve has been handling things. Steve might be a lot of things, but at least he's capable when he needs to be.

She mentions Strange, and another doctor he's never heard of, and while Tony's doing his best to listen, he finds himself more focused on the sound of her voice than the actual words. It could be the lingering sedation making him not as sharp as he would be if this were a normal day, or it could simply be the fact that he really likes her voice.

But once she mentions Peter, he finds himself paying closer attention again. Right now, Peter and Little Mermaid are the most important people in Tony's world, and most everything else pales in comparison to the two of them, even his own health. Of course, he'd rather be healthy with the two of them, but if something should ever happen to both of them, leaving Tony on his own, he's reasonably confident that all bets would immediately be off.

She mentions the arc reactor, and that Peter's trying to make a new one, and immediately, his eyes widen. It didn't register with him before that the arc reactor was damaged and not functioning, given how close to the edge his condition was, but now... now he knows it's not there. It's not functioning. Why would it be, after the damage it sustained?

Shrapnel in the chest... too close to the heart. That's bad. No, that's really bad.

Tony's breath hitches abruptly, and his eyes widen further, but then he hears it: Don't panic and the change happens instantly. He settles back down against the bed, uncertainty still obvious on his face, but the panic that was threatening to break loose has disappeared.

He listens as Little Mermaid tells him about Peter's graduation plans, and as she talks, asking if he'd be able to go, if she's looking, she might notice how Tony's eyes have lit up for the first time since all this began, probably starting with the moment he collapsed after completing the snap. ]
