[ Another sigh comes from off screen before a figure moves into view. A man in a vest, freshly pressed white dress shirt. Black slacks. Dark brown hair slicked back to be almost black. He wanders around before taking a seat and facing the camera.

Alan's own face looks back at him.

Mr. Scratch.

Alan should be used to seeing his doppleganger like this at some level now. Mr. Scratch has reached out to him several times through the course of this looping story. Making sure Alan is trapped in this loop. Making sure Alan knows exactly what he is after and what he'll be taking from the trapped writer. ]

{ You know, } [ The face contorts slightly as he begins fixing the cuff link on one sleeve. ] { At first, this was all about showing you what I'd take from you. How I was BETTER at being you. Your fame, your fortune, the way with people... even Alice. }

[ Mr. Scratch then almost looks melancholy for a moment. He leans back, hands in his lap, a frown on his face. ] { I realized something watching you run around like a mouse in a maze. You only care about the fame to some degree. The fortune is even less of a concern. And Alice? Well, sure, you love her still. Sure, you want me away from her, and I get it! You wouldn't want to see someone else be a better husband to the woman who served you divorce papers.

Ouch. That MUST have hurt.
}

[ Fingers come together in thought. Then, a smirk slowly twists on the face that is a reflection of Alan's own complexion. ] { I could take those things away from you and you'd STILL think you'd have a chance at winning. That something wasn't taken away while you're scurrying around like a rat. It took me a while to figure out what it was, you know. You and I? We've been doing this back and forth a bit longer than you remember. It's given me all the time to realize what it was I was missing. }

[ Mr. Scratch then begins working on the other cuff link. ] { I came across someone. You wouldn't know him, of course. Trapped in a maze just like you. Bald, too. He kept singing this annoying fucking son, man. But, you know how annoying songs are. It's the LYRICS that get to you. "An ordinary song, about an ordinary girl, from an ordinary town." } [ His eyes flick up to the camera then as the smile curls more. ] { I haven't been able to track her down JUST yet, but I'm looking. It shouldn't be long now. After all, I hear it can be PRETTY lonely in the dark... especially when the dark is thick enough to keep out the light of any bright stars. }
